Hello,

I don't know a great deal about RC model cars but my son wanted one for xmas. I bought this one...

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&am...

But there is a problem with either the ESC and/or motor (the seller told me this) so I need to get new ones. I guess it's a 540 size motor but what significance is the number of turns? I.e. what's the difference between a 17-turn motor and a 28 turn motor?

I'm considering this pair... will this be ok?

Motor - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&am...

ESC - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&am...

The car will just be run up and down the garden, not in races or anything. Also where is the best place for battery packs.

Thanks in advance smile
Gary

Hi Gary,

The 'turns' of a motor refer to it's speed. Basically the lower number of turns the faster the motor. If you want the techy stuff, the turns refer to the physical number of turns of wire that has been wound around the motors armature.

So in relation to an ESC, the motor you use cannot be lower than the limit specified by the ESC.

So the motor you are looking at has 28T, and the ESC's limit is 27T, therefore that combination is fine.
This new motor you may buy will be slower than your current 17T motor. Although if the motor is old, it may have lost significant performance since it was new, so the new might be just as fast.

As for batteries, the higher the rating, the longer the battery will last. e.g. 3300 mah, will last longer than a standard 1400 mah pack.

Hope that helps.

Gary,

That 27Turn ESC may end up being very limiting.

Much better to buy one capable of running more powerful motors now (lower number of turns) if can.

That ebay seller has some others for sale with better specification.

That motor will be fine in the Baja King. The limit, other than the durability of the the driveline, is usually how small a motor pinion can be fitted.

Basically, the more powerful the motor, the smaller the pinion you need to use - otherwise the car ends up being overgeared for the motor and the motor will get knackered very quickly.

The ebay seller of the motor has a real shop and lists his phone number - may be worth speaking to him as he may have better recommendations for your car - he may even do you a deal of motor and esc.
