I have been out of the world of RC cars for some years and having a quick look around the old names (like Kyosho) don't seem to be around quite so much although they still do the MP777.

So my question is - how competitive is this model these days - are there cheaper/better models available?

Kyosho still make some very good 1/8th buggies. If I was going to go into 1/8th off-road, I'd be looking at an MP-777 variant (WC / Kanai etc) or a Mugen MBX-5 variant (R / Prospec etc).

I used to have an inferno Kanai 3 a few years ago, very much in the minority at the club i raced at, the rest were using mugens.

I believe kyosho lost thier distributor in the uk a few years ago but there is a new one now.

Nothing ever broke on my inferno it was a great car.

Best advice is to go along to your nearest club and have a word with the people there and see what they are running

Been out and bought a Radio Systemi Crono RS7GR today..... looking forward to starting the build over the weekend along with an RB S7 Engine. Should be great fun. Amazing that it is one of the few models left that you can build up from scratch !

My son also is into this obscenly expensive hobby of ours and got himself a Hobao Hyper 8.5 Pro a month or so ago. While I have not yet seen it race properly, I can confirm that the Hyper is incredibly tough.. even Josh has not been able to break it yet despite a 6 foot high flight which ended on the front shock mount !

Just remember how obscenely expensive and addictive the RC game can become :-)

Alternativly, let Mastercard be your friend and get down the model shop.

I know what you mean - it seems you could easily spend £1K getting started!

I think I will go down the second hand route for a while and see how I get on, £1K is a lot to spend to find out I am a crap driver :-)

£1k is about the starting point if you are going racing with Nitro having a slightly lower entry than electric. Second hand is good if you can find something that hasn't been hammered... easy to buy something that will just break every time out.

A very good point, but if the person selling os a reasonable driver and services the car regularly then surely the risk is lower (I have a specific one in mind) - the base models seem to be an awful lot stronger than last time I was around the scene!

decided on a second hand (but not used much) Losi 8ight with DX2 to get things started - not sure if I am more worried things work out or not - as everyone keeps saying this seems to be a very expensive hobby!

Got everything rebuilt and had a first go on the track, first three laps went ok, but managed to crash on the fourth and lost a front wheel.

Damage not too bad, but I now realise why this hobby is so expensive, went online to order new bits, cost around £10, but actually spent another £60 on various hop-ups!
