Starting a collection of model cars...Help

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I don't have room for any more real cars so I would like to buy one of those glass cabinets you affix to the wall with several shelves to put model cars on.

Firstly, I would like to get the right size cabinet, does anyone have a link to one, and secondly what size models is the most collectable, best for the cabinet?

And what makes should I look out for to have some uniformity between the models?

There are loads on Ebay but as I am starting from scratch want to get it right first time.

If anyone has any pics of their collection similarly houses I would love to see them.

I guess the first thing to decide is if there is any particular genre of model you fancy, be that road cars, F1 cars, GT cars, Le Mans prototypes etc etc etc.

You're going to get more 'car per inch' with 1:43 scale than 1:18 scale, obviously.

I'd recommed Picture Pride as well. Not cheap but good quality.

If there are any swapmeets being held in your local area, you might come across display cabinet traders plying their wares.

As far as cars are concerned, I would stick to CMC model cars. They are not cheap (around £150 each) but VERY good value when you consider the detail in each model. They are proper collectors cars.

CMC are good, but not the only ones.

But really it depends what your budget is and what you're after.

Kyosho do some very nice 1:18 stuff, I have a black F40 lightweight which is nicely detailed (canvas seatbelts etc). AutoArt is pretty good too. All for around £60. Then there's GMP for prostreet-style Americana and hot rods etc (not like the Maisto c##p which is caricitured, garish rubbish, it's to scale and highly detailed, think lateral-g.net and that's the kind of stuff they do) but that is touching on £100.

Or if you're feeling particularly flush there's the daddy which is Exoto. But don't expect to pay less than £200 for a "cheap" 1:18. (But the detail is exquisite.)
