Hi all,

We're having an extension built at home and I've just had a clearout and come accross loads of old models including several Scalextric cars that I had back in the early 80s. One is a red Ford Capri 3.0s which has seemed to survive being in a cardboard box for god knows how many years and still seems to be in working order. The actual car in completely unmarked with no damage what so ever and even the drivers head is still intact inside the car. The other car is a gold Porsche 911 of the same era. I have the silver sister car - I remember they came part of the kit and track, but this is missing the drive unit and wheels so I only have the shell, but the gold 911 is in reasonable condition. Does anyone know if these are worth anything or is there a Scalextric specialist I can get in contact with?

I would really appreciate some help. Thank you

Eric Mc

I really think a quick Google would throw up lots of potential buyers - not to mention the ubiquitous eBay.

The early 80s is not that desirable or collectable a period for Scalextric - given that the sets go back to the late 1950s. Having said that, if the cars are in reasonable condition I am sure you would find a buyer.

There's always a load of Scalextric stuff on eBay, including stuff from the '80s. Don't recall any of it going for mega money though, unless it's a really rare item.

The cars will be worth something, but not much. However, the gold and silver Porsches came in a 'Le Mans' set with the old style Le Mans start grid (offset from the main track). That may be worth a bit if in good condition as they're quite rare.

Cars from the 80's between £5 and £10 depending on condition, rarity (only a very few rare cars from the 80's) and if they are boxed.

I have a few cars from the 60's, I think one of them is a lotus F1 car, although the condition of them is pretty poor.
I prefered the old cars to the 80's/90's cars that I had new as they didnt have magnets on the bottom so they could drift around more easily so used them alot when I was a child.

Would they be worth anything?

60's Scalextric cars 'can' be worth quite a bit. For example a mint Bentley can go for circa £350, mint DB4GT for around £300 etc.

The F1 cars were more common, fragile and in some cases less detailed. They tend to go for a fair bit less. IIRC the Lotus is one of the rarer ones, so will be worth something to someone if it's in restorable condition.

Just look on eBay, as has been said most of the Scalextic items get traded there. Generally early cars are only of interest to collectors if they are in good condition else they'll make £5-£10 ...

Darn rolleyes I was hoping I could be sitting on a small gold mine. Still maybe in another 20 years they might go up in value. laugh I'll have a gander on ebay et al for some guide prices, but thanks to you all for your help, it's been much appreciated.smile

This is exactly the sort of stuff I'm buying at the moment. I've got all the vintage Tamiya R/Cs I wanted when I was a kid, now on to the Scalextric.
Don't pay more than about £20 for a model, and F1 cars are my theme of the moment. Could be persuaded by a whale tail Porsche or two though...love the 80s!

I had the silver and gold Porsche set, "le Mans" set IIRC. Working headlights on them!!

Got miles of it kicking about too!
