4 stroke IC engines?

I am wanting to get back into RC aircraft after a long lay off.

I am wanting to fly from our small paddock over the fields to the back of the houses.I know the farmer and that is ok.

I prefer IC to electric but have never had a 4 stroke. Are these quieter than 2 strokes and does using an engine at the upper end of the stated capacity range mean they can be throttled back a bit and so a bit less noisy?

My local model shop sell SC engines and their 4 strokes are way cheaper than a lot of others.
Anyone had experience of them and are they any good? I do not want to spend a fortune if I am not in it for the long term but do not want to buy twice if they are no good.

Any particular reason you don't want to go electric? It's way less messy, and with a few Lipo batteries and a brushless motor you can get decent run times.

My personal thoughts. I don't run any 4 strokes, all 2 or leccy. 4 Strokes are generally heavier than 2s the pokey ones never seem to be that much quieter & using a decent size 2s & decent silencing & a big prop gives less than 4 stroke noise. I run an OS40FSR in a Neiuport look alike (not Flair) & with a 12 x 6 & 2 silencers it is very quiet indeed & in fact most think it is a 4s.
Never had SC 4s but have a few of their 2s & they are OK.

I have an ASP .70 on a 40 size chipmunk and an ASP 1.20 on a 60 size Spitfire, both 4 strokes. Noise is about the same but I fly in the desert so noise isn't something I have had to contend with!!

I find them less problematic in terms of tuning and better for ditching in the sand as the intake is around the back!

If you check justengines.co.uk they have an extensive range of engines/silencers and are a very helpful bunch!!

I like the sound of fours. They swing bigger props and use less fuel with the tradeoff being a little more maintainance and of course more expense up-front to buy the engine.
