As this is the PH staple car answer to every question someone somewhere must me making a scale model of it.
I'm after a MK2, all the ones I can find are silly money, I can remember when 1:43 models were bought with pocket money and 1:18 scale was the biggy at £20, but I guess I'm getting old.
Perfect wish list is a MK2 in black in 1:18 scale for under £20 but can be a little bit flexible on colour and size.
Anyone got any ideas where to look?

Ebbro produce the MK1 & MK3 in 1:43 , Autoart also produce the MK3 in 1:43 & 1:18. Gate models produced the MK1 in 1:18
No Mk2 i'm afraid , and don't hold your breath for one. You are correct about price increases over time , but when you buy high quality over budget , you get what you pay for.

Aoshima did a Mk 2 in 1/24 scale a year or two ago. I've only ever seen this Itasha version, but just because the anime characters appear on the decal sheet, doesn't mean you have to put them on.
Wheels aren't brilliant but do a search on eBay and you'll find loads of alternatives.
There was also a Tamiya Mk 1 Eunos which you could get some clever person to convert to a Mk 2 for you.
