The title says it all really - do you have specific modelling themes and, if so, what inspired you to choose them?

I'll kick off with the Korean War - for me it was the combination of the ultimate piston warplanes versus the first real workable jet fighters. It's a pity my models didn't survive my house move a few years ago.

I suppose I do. It often depends on what I am reading or if there are any series on TV which may have inspired me.

My general theme is WW2 British aircraft - but I wander off that quite regularly. The last four models I built were all WW2 British (Mosquito, Fulmar, Typhoon Ib abd Spitfire I. My current model (the Blackburn Skua) fits into that theme too.

WW2 Tanks, mainly Panzers but also Russian British and American. Cromwell is next on the list I think.

Why? As an engineer I really appreciate two elements. Firstly in 20 years they went from prototype to the centre of land based warfare. Secondly I just love how the engineers of the time managed to design mass produceable, reliable 40+ tonne machines in incredible short time.

Not to say that the planes/ships etc of the time didn't have the same engineering acheivement but I'm just not that interested in them.

Also the scale of some of the battles is just mind boggling, Kursk in particular is amazing to learn about and the footage that exists from Kursk is almost shocking in its ferocity, there is one piece of footage where a T34 literally smashes straight though a Panzer III (I think).

I like to learn as I build, have documentaries on in the background or photo's and articles in books and on my Laptop to refer to.

Funny you should mention that, I was just looking into some history on the Spitfire MkVb so that I can build some planes of the equivalent period. So the theme would be based on the first model I got!

But I think the long term goal is to get into 1/32 scale and start to build a Goodwood Revival theme using model aircraft, slot cars and assorted scenery.... but that is a long way off and when I get better at this. Stick to the 1/72 scale, though will keep them all the same era as a stickler for accuracy (annoyed that the model in front of me doesn't have the markings exactly as the photos I have just found)

Pete - the Spitfire you modelled is RF-D which was the mount of Polish Pilot Jan Zumbach (as used in the infamous BNP poster last year). RF-D appeared in a number of guises during its career with 303 Squadron. When I built that model a year or so ago, I found a number of photgraphs of the same plane with subtle variations in the markings. The serial number, for instance, was in at least three different locations on the rear fuselage depending on when the picture was taken.

The markings as depicted by Airfix are correct - for a particular moment in that plane's history.

I have made all sorts, but I really do like a bit of sci-fi, this was largely influenced by my ex-father in law (Mat Irvine)

I do enjoy modelling armour, unforunatley I found aircraft a bit sterile as weathering them always looked wrong.

I think I might get in the garage and dig out a kit.. hmmm pic's will follow.

Mat's displaying at the Telford display this weekend - and he's the guest speaker at the Saturday night dinner - which I'm attending smile.

I've chatted with him a couple of times bnow and he's always good for a few anecdotal stories from his days at the BBC.

Tell him Jamie say's Hi... when he does the puzzled face say Amy's ex. havent spoken with him in a while. His workshops are jaw dropping.

I remember dropping the blakes liberator at a show I was helping him with once, it broke into about 2 dozen pieces. I also broke the tail off of K9 lifting him out of the car.... I am sure he misses having me around.. not.

Well. I'll be there. I'm travelling up tomorrow with the Farnborough IPMS mob. We'll be helping set up display tables etc on Friday and then helping put it all away Sunday evening.

If you do make the trip, enquire at the Farnborough IPMS stand - I may be on duty. Otherwise I'll be wandering around the display halls admiring the exhibits and spending.

Eric, any chance of a link or a "what's where and when" for that show

I might be able to get away if I don't let SWMBO know I'm beginning to get that old familiar itch again...

(she would NOT be overjoyed for some odd reason...)

Thank you Eric

IPMS has come along in huge leaps since my day

Apart from B Darbyshire I didnt recognise a single name

So big next question before I stop hijacking a great thread

Is B.Darbyshire Brian? I see to remember that name from way back when.

I hope I can get along to the show, I'm bound to know one or two people, do they charge at the door?

I'm not really into the main people at the IPMS. I only know the President and the chaps here in Farnborough.

There is an admission charge for non-IPMS members. Admission is £9.00 on the day or £14.00 for the weekend.

If you click on the flyer pdf file you'll get all the details.

They used to allow people to join the IPMS "on the door" which meant you got free admission on the day as a member. However, they gave up on this last year as too many members were leaving their renewals to the day they attended the exhibition. It was causing the Membership Secretary too much hassle. It's now too late to become a member in time for free admission this year. If you did join now, you would, of course, get free admission next year.
