Well done, that man...superb dexterous faffery...
Any idea why that example did not carry a swastika..?
The swastika has been painted out. That was because the Wing Commander, Hans-Jürgen Erdmann von Cramon-Taubadel married a girl who, in Goering's opinion, was not suitable (Jewish). He therefore ordered the unit to remove their "Ace of Spades" mascot from the cowlings of their Messerschmitts and paint a red band around the noses of their aircraft as a mark of shame. When Cramon-Taubadel was replaced, the “Ace of Spades” mascot was reinstated, but, in response to this, the unit overpainted the swastikas of their aircraft in protest.Any idea why that example did not carry a swastika..?

Yeah ta.Any idea why that example did not carry a swastika..?
Re. the Swastika - or more correctly Hakencreuz, whatever, who cares. This is what I found out about the aircraft and the unit (earlier in the thread). This is the commonly stated story, possibly incorrect in chronology, since nobody really knows what happened and when, and various photos contradict each other if the dates on teh back are to be believed. It was almost certainly painted out as some kind of protest by the pilots though:
This is Bf 109 E4 "White 5" of 3rd Gruppe/JG 53, shot down over Margate, Kent on 6th September 1940. The pilot was Unteroffizier Schulte and the aircraft crash landed near Manston airfield. The swastika has been painted out. That was because the Wing Commander, Hans-Jürgen Erdmann von Cramon-Taubadel married a girl who, in Goering's opinion, was not suitable (Jewish). The photo is taken in Barker's Pool, Sheffield. It was displayed in aid of the Sheffield Newspapers War Fund (some kind of fundraising effort where you could buy a sticker and put it on the aircraft). As a 10 year old boy, my Dad was shown around it.
Cheers

Haven't built one in years. Got a Lotus 25 and a Spitfire 1A to be going on with.
Excellent! Both Tamiaya I hope? The Lotus 25 is a stonker straight from the box (as are most Tamiya models)No idea where my exhausts went. The only thng about it that's a bit naff is the clear plastic simulation of the mesh intake filter cover. It might be worth making a new one out of some fine mesh. Whatever, enjoy yourself and post some pics.

Lotus kit is the same but the Spitfire is 1/48 Airfix. It was in a window I walked past for 12 quid. It being the first model for a while, and the first I will have airbrushed cheaper is probably better.
Going off topic now, that rather lovely 109.
Good luck with them both.Going off topic now, that rather lovely 109.
Off topic? I'm not too bothered - they're all models and I like reading about and looking at other peoples work; always something to learn.

A 1:32 SE5a biplane for Christmas, then a 1:20 F1 car, probably another McLaren MP4/13, but super-detailled this time.

Can I ask you what you used for the racing green? Can't see the spec Tamiya paint at the online shops. I ended up in Halfords, but all their rattle can BRGs are metallic and possibly not dark enough. Is that dust on your model or metallic?Cheers!
