Absolutely incredible. If only I had the skill, time and patience. Amazing!

Classic problem of overly dark panel lines, looks like a cell-shaded cartoon plane.

Eeek, Vac formed! That aside, very skillfull build. I disagree re the panel lines. Even at that scale, they lend a touch of interest to what would be a pretty uniform and boring surface.

Why build a realistic model and then make it look deleiberately unrealistic? Mental

I'd like to see that in a bare metal version

I'm not a fan of overstated panel lines but I sorta remember the grey Lightnings did look awfully "used" after a short time in paint

Looks OK, bordering on overdone

There is somethng I'm less happy with, but I can't put a finger on it. Might be the oleo legs, weren't they VERY shiny metal, chrome even

but hell I am not complaining, a very good "realistic looking" Lightning.

I have some bits of vac formed mk1a somewhere, never did cut them out except the fuselage.

I will almost say forget it

I only looked at the PH picture without opening the link

This guy is a master modeller

his detailing work puts me to shame and I used to be very good

eyes and age would preclude me claiming that now

He has a touch to be envied

But still not convinced about the legs even though the picture of a silver Lightning shows a quite dull oleo surface

anyway

brilliant. thanks for posting the link

I wish I hadn't opened this thread. I'm building a 1:72 Lightning at the moment and there is zero chance of it looking even 1% as good as that.

It's not unrealistic. This photo shows the the panel lines clearly visible on an in-service aircraft, even in a not particularly good photo, and at a distance. The underside of the wings and fuselage will be even worse due to dirt from wheels and leakage under gravity from hydraulics/engine fluids etc. I think he got it about right:

As for the unrealistic or over enthusiastic lines comments, I've worked on 50s jets and they look a lot dirtier than he has made his example look, the Lightning especially leaks like a sieve, if it doesn't it's empty.
This guy is quite simply a master builder.

On something like a P51D or a P80, I agree its very easy to overstate the panel lines. Most photo's I've seen of these aircraft don't have much panel definition due to the nature of the skin surface. Have a look at the bucs and Tornado's serving during the gulf, completely different story. smile
