Advice Please: Scale Model Car for Birthday Present?

My Dad is 80 this year. He spent most his working life building protptype and show cars for major manufacturers.

I thought it would be good to buy him a scale model car for his birthday to give him something to work on.

Preferably I'd like it to be metal and one that he has to build up. Good detailing is essential. Perhaps a good plastic kit would be acceptable. Ideally, 1950-70's vintage.

Its his 80th so budget not so important (albeit measured in the 100's please).

Suggestions gratefully received.

These are excellent: large scale, mostly plastic, but some rubber and metal, and some nut and bolt construction on many of them. About £100 or less:

No probs, but be aware that some of them were originally designed and produced many years ago (Lola T70 and Porsche 910 for example), and while still excellent models, will not quite be up to the standard of the more modern ones. Check out some online reviews of the ones you are interested in.

TBH though in my experience, with Tamiya you can't really go wrong.

Some of these models are hard to get hold of in the UK, so before you make your decision check with a UK supplier, or see, for instance, Hannants:

I know that the JPS Lotus was not reissued over here because of the cigarette badging. Stupid, I know, but there you are!

Thanks for the follow-up advice on this.

As you say, availability does not seem to match the catalogue range. Then, as I have discovered before, vendors allow you to order and then email you to tell you that it is on back order.

So, thanks for the website link as well. It showed clearly what they had in stock and I have ordered two.
