Did he serve in Catalinas too?
I believe so, unfortunately I don't have too much information. There are a few 1/72 models of the Ctalina out there as well.
The Airfix and Revell models are fairly old and show it.
The Academy PBY/Catalinas re more recent (early 1990s) and are the best available at the moment in 1/72.

I know you already have the Airfix kit, but there are a few pre-built models available.
If you google "shorts sunderland model", here are a few of them...

I dont think it would be too difficult to get someone to change the colour scheme / Insignia.

I've got the three WEM etch sets for the Sunderland for when I build one for Britmodeller group build. The do add quite a bit extra detail. There is also someone on Britmodeller doing a fantastic build of one based on Q - Queenie in New Zealand. He does have the advantage of helping out on said plane, so he's really going to town on it. If the OP's Father flew them in '44/'45 then it was probably a Mk 5 for which there is no kit or update set made for the Airfix Mk 111.

Dad flew them in 44/45, the only thing I know is that it would have been Coastal Command.
I've been in touch with the Sunderland Trust at Pembroke and am in the process of finding out details about specific aircraft. Unfortunately the only picture of my father in the Air Force shows him fast asleep in a Catalina.
Dr that's kind of you, Sheffield you say? Hmmm Snake Pass...
I may well be in touch when I have the specifics thank you.
No probs...if and when, let me know. Of course, if anyone else wants to go a bit further for you ie etch kits, mods etc, then that´s fine too. All Im offering is to build it FOC & OOB for the sake of your Dad, if nobody else will.I've been in touch with the Sunderland Trust at Pembroke and am in the process of finding out details about specific aircraft. I built the Revell Catalina many many years ago (still got the centre wing section!) a nice model, but as Eric says... very old.
I went to the old Gun Tower at Pembroke Dock a couple of years ago - lots of Sunderland info!
Cheers,

Does the Mark V have Pratt and Whitneys (as opposed to Bristol Hercules)?
Actually Eric for Mk's 1 to 111 the engines were Bristol Pegasus, the Mk IV had Hercules then the Mk 5 had the Twin Wasps. The Mk 5 also had radar in pods under the outer wings instead of the Porcupine aerials, although the pods were retrofitted to some Mk III's. The mid upper turret was also removed from a lot of aircraft later in the war.Thanks.
I am sure Aeroclub would have the correct engines for a Pratt and Whitney version if needed. The cowlings and exhaust system would also need to be changed to make an authentic Mk V.
What the OP needs to do is find out exactly what squadron his dad was in when on Sunderlands and the time period involved. That will allow any model maker to track down the appropriate version and the appropriate colours and markings to applyb to the model.

Hello
Does anybody on here fancy building and painting one for a small fee? Doesn't have to look like some of the artwork you see on here but has to look good, ideally I'd like it to be carrying accurate markings but I haven't got the full details of those yet.
Thanks
Have a look here to get an idea of what you,re dealing with:Does anybody on here fancy building and painting one for a small fee? If you put your request on Britmodeller, perhaps under WW2, someone might help you out. There are at least 2 people I know on there build for commission, and their work looks excellent. Trouble is, unless you know someone can build, (and scratchbuild well for your kit) it may well turn out looking like a dog. Have you considerdéd getting a die cast model? I think Corgi do a reasonable Sunderland that could be re-decalled (type ´corgi sunderland´into google images - there are several versions avaialble).

DOH! sorry about that. Oh well, doesn't do any harm giving the link out more than once.
Just had another quick scan through his thread and noticed that both fuselage halves appear to have quite extensive scratch built internal detail. Of course I may be wrong, but doesn´t this suggest that once it´s built, 99% of his work will be totally invisible? Never really understood the point of doing that.Gassing Station | Scale Models | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
