I know you aren't Airfix's greatest fan and understand the reasons.

But

With your skill and Airfix's "if they hadn't made it no other bugger would have-ness" that is a lovely model of the Sunderland

Very well done thumbup

It's a delight to the eye, I'm sure the recipient will be knocked out by it.

Thanks Perdu! I must admit...I didn't really think it would end up looking so much like a Sunderland. So maybe Airfix aren't so bad! After all it's not as if it took months of hard work, just fairly standard techniques in slightly greater quantities.

I think that's lovely. There's something very cool about a perfectly executed OOB model.

Thank You very much!

Re. O.O.B. vs Aftermarket for this model:

IMHO The White Ensign Etch kits are not worth the bother unless you're completely remodelling the entire aircraft (maybe like Alan on Britmodeller). Their exterior details are confined to antennae and rigging (which are easily made out of sprue and/or wire), and the pitot tube pylon (which is too thin in p/e brass anyway). Their interior detail kits would be 90% invisible once the Airfix glazing is in place. Very nice etches, but they wouldn't have significantly improved this kit, and the time to install them would in no way be justified. Maybe the aftermarket props and engines would make a slight improvement, but..I dunno. the engines are barely visible anyway.

What someone should make is a kit of replacement turret assemblies (with brass turned guns and resin fairings) and a full acetate glazing and mask set. They *would* make an improvement, and would allow any cockpit detailling to be more visible.

Cheers,

I remember them from when I made built my Sunderland in 1974 frown

I haven't completed a kit since 1980. I'll photograph and post pics of those I did back then, they're still in Mum's loft.
