Morning all,

A local outfit (normally excellent) were MOTing, fitting uprated shocks and checking my Trophy's geometry this week so I got them to change the oil and filter while they were at it.

I usually use Fuchs Titan Supersyn 5w-40 (and actually have some sitting in my garage) yet STUPIDLY never told them what grade of oil to use, assuming they'd get it right. They have stuck Millers Longlife 5w-30 in the car which is too thin from what I have read online. Is it really that unsuitable or should I change it ASAP?

I don't feel I have any recourse with the garage as oil often seems to be a matter of opinion and I never told them to use 5w-40. I only noticed when I looked again at the invoice when I got home.

Input appreciated.

IME you can usually use different grades of oil depending on temperature and they usually overlap. I'd have thought it would be fine but check your owners manual.

Why not go back and ask if they are sure they have used the correct oil grade as it has always had 5/40 fully in the past and you thought that was the recommended grade. You could always ask them to show you where 5/30 is listed for your car.
It seems like 5/30 is the modern oil of choice ,it doesn't mean it is the correct oil for your pride and joy though, and Autodata would seem to suggest 0/40 or 5/40 fully as the correct grade.

Have spoken to the garage and they've agreed to change it tomorrow. It'd be a nice gesture if it was done FOC seeing as I have checked the handbook which stipulates 5w-30 to be used on petrol engines but NOT the Renaultsport models. Either way I will be much happier with the correct stuff in my car!

The difference between 5/30 and 5/40 is very small, especially in UK climate. It's not as if they dug out some old Castrol 20/50!

Agreed, what would you change them to?

Also I would get the oil changed.

More importantly the oil for the 172/182 must be fully synthetic.

Apologies, never noticed the question! I had rear adjustable Konis fitted. The standard Sachs failed last year and are impossible to get hold of so I'd fitted standard 182 shocks as a stopgap. The Konis are cheaper than Sachs but arguably a very good replacement. I have refurbed Sachs on the front.

EDIT: PS I did get the oil swapped!

I assume they are Mark Fish Koni's, they are goodgear. Even if not they are good...

Just the standard Konis, unsure on the best setting for them but definitely an improvement over the standard 182 shocks I had on.
