That was me.

After the accident it went down to a breakers at Westbury and went up for sale. Looking at the DVLA website it's got no MOT or Tax and has a VIC marker against the reg. So I'm assuming whoever subsequently bought it broke it for spares.

I've always preferred big Citroens to their Peugeot counterparts

One of many cars that deserves to do better than it has. Unfashionable badge y'see.

I drove the super-eco 1600 diesel semi-auto one when it first came out and it's a very nice car. Comfy, quiet, smooth ride, decent interior, generally a nicer place to be than the German stuff that outsells it!

Only let-down was the gearbox, typical robotised manual in that it feels like a slightly dozy learner driver is changing gear for you.

Thread resurrection ...

Bought a second hand 508 RXH today. Depreciation has done its job, so it's pretty cheap for a comfortable estate with some toys; a fair bit cheaper than equivalent Volvo and Audi models.

The ride seems quite refined to me, but my expectations are set by years driving a Hilux and a Chimaera, so take with pinch of salt.

Mid range poke is OK if you press the magic button. It's no rocket ship, but feels like it should be able to overtake reasonably briskly.

At low speeds the only way I could tell when the diesel was running was by looking at the dash. It cuts in and out seamlessly.

Primarily bought it for wife to use. She wanted somewhere nice to sit, room for sprog and sprog's kit, very low CO2 rating as she is a lentilist, bit of extra ground clearance and 4wd due to location of house. Boxes all ticked. Couldn't find any other car that met those criteria.

Lovely!

They have good road presence. I recall seeing two large cars gaining on me a couple of months. Clearly different, but had the same presence in the mirror.

A few seconds later an RXH flew by followed by a new shape A6 Allroad.

They fit the French stereotype well. Great engines, super interiors, but very dodgy electronics

Peugeot UK are about to delete it from the range which is a shame ... Just like C5 I believe

The problem it has is the price. Top spec ones are getting on for £30k, at which point people will go and buy a poverty spec Audi.

Drove lots through work. Much nicer to drive than equivalent passat or a4. We never had any issues with them but all our cars were <10k on the clock.

It's even worse than that.

The RXH starts at £31k, but only since they introduced the diesel model. Initially the only model was the hybrid starting at about £37k new. So for a long time the A4 Alltrack could be had new for a fair bit less than the Peugeot. Unless you were prepared to pay through the nose for the fuel efficiency, risk Peugeot's electrics and take the predictably huge depreciation hit with a smile, you'd never go near one of them.

Are there any press releases to that effect?

The C5 is certainly being deleted - the last few are being flogged off at BCA with 2 miles on the clock of each. Probably a bargain there.

Shame really, very, very good cars and drive like a proper big Citroen should. An Exclusive model is about the comfiest most refined motorway basher you can find this side of an S-Class.

My XF v8 was in getting work and I got a 508 as a courtesy car. I have always been a Peugeot fan years ago but they lost it, but to be fair I really liked the 508.

I picked up my mum later that day and she assumed it was the XF... she didn't realise till the end of the day it was a different car and shes normally quite aware of these things, hah smile

Overall, I liked it basically and changed my opinion of them.

Did I dream it or are the replacements (whatever they maybe) for the C5, 508 & Insignia all one joint project?

Funny you should say that, when it comes to changing my C5 estate in the future the only car I would consider is an S class, a 2004/5 W220 in my case. Such a lot of car for the money and a 320cdi will probably be more economical than the Citroen.

Not sure about the RXH, but I know that PSA are ceasing production of the diesel-hybrid drivetrain. This means no more 508 hybrid, or DS5 hybrid.

I quite like them, would have been quite nice with a 270 THP engine, but retaining the nice comfy suspension instead of the über sportlich we have from all other manufacturers. Shame the fastest petrol I can find was the 156bhp THP. Really cheap for what they are too, £8k for 62 plate models is a bargain!

I really like the Citroën C5 and C6 too, must be something about the comfort and gallic way of doing things.

its such a shame that people dont buy these and other big pugs and citroens

we have a c5 estate and its so well put together, silent, and looks great, if i was in the market for a big estate it would be one of those.

Im seriously considering a DS5.

my neighbor has had 3 508s, all perfect and havent gone wrong, currently, they have a white GT line, its a handsome thing thats for sure.

I have a DS5 and would recommend it. It's a lovely place to be and really stands out from the crowd. The main bug is the harsh ride but the positives of everything else far outweigh the ride quality. I think they will always be a rare sight in the UK, most people are desperate to sit behind a BMW or VAG badge.
