Yep, had the Gearbox replaced in mine too after 27K miles

Main shaft bearing failure. It made a HORRENDOUS grinding noise when coasting to a stop

The amount of metal in the gearbox oil was amusing

I wasn't convinced my rebuilt gearbox was in full health. Some of the clunks that came from it did not inspire confidence for the future

They all clunk when changing gear (can hear it most when changing gear with the window down at low speed).

Main shaft bearing is a whole other noise!

Yeah both of my boxes clunk, especially when shifting into 1st before pulling away

A lot of it I put down to "because race car" and the diff

Someone described the gearbox as a train signal junction box once I thought that was pretty accurate.

Thats what you get for putting a Renault Traffic gearbox in though

Think that was EVO. Very apt.

Just came across this thread.

Got myself a Yellow Cup-S last year in September. One of the last out of the factory where they had loaded every option then given a dealer a £35k Megane to try & sell.

Went

Megane R26 Lux (4 years)
BMW 330i Touring E91 Manual ( 4 years)
E92 M3 DCT ( 20 months)

Cup-S

I think its interesting reading through the threads the people going to or coming from E92 M3's to Meganes.

Non-Car people cannot understand why a BMW disappears and a Megane appears. They think you have hit hard times.

Only problem to date was a headlamp filling with water. Changed by dealer under warranty. But I am at pretty low miles.

Great car. Noise is only let down. Although sounds better outside car.

Interesting reading the level of discounts when new.

If I had know that I probably would have bought a Zero Spec Car (As I am tight) when they were new.

Get the middle silencer deleted (Often referred to as "Mid box chop")

Cost £60 and made the noise of my Cup-S much better

Makes me giggle all the time

Picked up my new (to me) 275 Cup S on Friday. It's flame red, Recaros, Akra, Ohlins and Rs Monitor. I've had two RS Meganes before, but the spec on this one is just about perfect.

I bought it 'unseen' bar a couple of photos and a grainy video. Thankfully there weren't too many nasty surprises bar being a little shabby inside, low front pads and some terrible Arrowspeeds on the front.

It need a couple of bits sorting under warranty - an intermittent issue with the driver's side door not unlocking, and a strange on/off vibration when there's a bit of right-hand steering angle applied. It's almost like driving over a rumble strip. Ideas welcomed...?
Just an update on this last aspect for future reference if/when someone else experiences the same issue. It turned out to be a knackered hub assembly and possibly the bearing too. Both now replaced under warranty (albeit some months and 3 trips to the dealer down the line) and all-is-good.

I occasionally get mad urges for another 987.2, something with a characterful N/A engine or a Lotus of some description, but the temptation disappears after every drive in the Megane. Fantastic car.

You and me both - while the car has quite a unique reputation among people who have owned or driven it properly, I reckon it's still under rated by most who think it's just another hot hatch. Having ran a 987.1 on road and track and really enjoyed it, I am not sure which is the best drivers' car, the Renault is that good and will take track many track miles while I suspect the Porsche won't.

Totally agree on the first point. It follows the modern HH template (4-pot turbo etc) and yet manages to drive completely differently to most of the others.

I'm not sure on the 987 either. Mine was so well-resolved that it barely broke sweat in my ownership, but a flat-6 right behind your ear and a carnewal howling away is a lovely thing.

Yes sure the 987 is probably a purer experience on reflection. I am not sure it is as track friendly from a long term reliability and cost efficiency point of views though.

Mine is now sadly up for sale (in Leicester on a well-known auction site) for a bargain £14995. Ohlins, Akra, Recaros, RS Monitor, Alcantara, Flame Red etc. It also has a transferable warranty from the Audi dealership I bought it from.

Staggeringly good car, but I need to free up some cash due to one client going bust, owing me a load of money, and another deciding to cancel 3 days into an 8 month contract!

Sorry to hear that... Sounds like a bargain, it should sell quickly at that price.

Cheers Nick - struggling to get PX offers (for a downgrade to something cheaper) of much above £11k. There doesn't seem to be much appetite in the trade to give higher than standard book values even with the spec it has. Very odd.

Renault’s don’t really change much in the ‘book’ for options, it does make them sell better, if rather have you car than standard one for sure, but convincing a sales manager it’s work a lot more than a boggo one is another thing!

The people that think their Megane is worth much more than book are the people stuck with their cars for ages.

There is a lot recycling Autotrader not selling.
