Hey guys,

Im looking to move from my 2011 corsa ive owned since new and think perhaps the Clio 197 may be a good logical step.

When i worked in automotive i drove one back to back with a VXR and it was so much more fun

I was considering this model: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2017...

Is this the right sort of price and history? Or should I be looking for something else / a different price point?

Hoping to part ex my car and put the rest to finance and keep my cash in the bank for utility elsewhere.

Can anyone also speak to cost of ownership? the corsa was a 1.0 so never cost much, anything is going to be worse so im prepared

Car will be used for weekend driving, as i work in london and dont need a car for my commute, milage per year will be minimal

Cheers for advice

Hey chap,

There is a post listed as Renault Clio 200 (2009/2010) so take a look at that.

The link you have posted is of a RS200 and not a 197. So have a poke around a few sites and decide what model of clio you are after then list a essential vs desirable spec you are after.

The price does look reasonable, but it really depends what spec you want the clio. I would not pay that much for the spec it is at but everyone is different.

I have a RS200 CUP which I only use for weekends, it is a fantastic drive.

I'd want the Recaro seats for sure, especially at that price.

I don't think that's a great price for that example, non cup, no Recaros, generally regarded as the least desirable colour.

At least the gearbox has been overhauled which is a major issue with these.

I just paid £4K for a 59 plate Clio RS 200 on 62K miles with a full Renault service history from a reputable dealer in Somerset so some good bargains can be had. Only issues were minor cosmetic ones such as the buttons worn on the radio (£25 for a good used one), battery cover broken (£15 new) and some new mats needed. Handles like a go-kart and is reasonably quick but it's a second car for me as I use a Jag X-Type diesel for commuting.

My 5 cents may not be of much help, as I am on record on this site as being supremely disinterested in driving.
29 years driving a London Black Cab, preceded by 10 or 11 years of punching articulated 38 tonners all over Europe, from Munich to Madrid, and all points in between, rendered the thought of sitting behind a steering wheel again, a tad distasteful.
Even if, by some stroke of misfortune it was unavoidable, I'd descend into the pits of despair if the vehicle had 3 pedals, instead of a civilised 2.
I digress, threatening a complete withdrawal of labour, my wife stamped her foot in August, and insisted on a week in an apartment on the Algarve, Portugal.
We're there now, in Conceição de Tavira.
Our rental car is a Renault Clio, probably 2016/2017, and after my hissing fit on seeing that it was a 5 speed manual, I was pleasantly surprised at what a well behaved, and easy to handle car it is.
I drove the 30-35 minutes from Faro airport to the apartment, but after that, it's been down to Mrs 7.
The only 3 things I missed from her auto Peugeot 2008, were the reversing camera, the audible warning when getting close to something, and that the Clio wasn't automatic, but as I'm a good driver, (in my estimation), I could live with that.
FWIW, I'll give it my seal of approval, but I'd prefer an automatic.

My RenaultSport Clio RS200 Cup.
Absolutely gutted guys, the RS200 is now up for sale due to needing a deposit for a house. 1 of only 15 and in a immaculate condition with ultra low miles. Took me 2 years to find this spec and condition.

The following link is to Gumtree UK so sorry if this is not allowed?

On the assumption that was aimed in my direction, I appreciate that the OP wasn’t asking what a 2016/17 Clio was like, but I thought I’d truthfully say that IMO a Clio isn’t a bad car.

Noted and understood, what I was saying was the 2 cars mentioned, couldn't be further apart from one another mechanically. or in driveability, even though they are both Clio's.

Make sure the clutch has been done.

What was thought to be box failure has recently now been been diagnosed as clutch failure leading to box failure.

You want fairly fresh swivel hubs, they're a big bill.

If it hasn't been maintained by a reputable specialist or Renault walk away, this applies even more strongly to the cambelt change.

The recaros are nice but often not worth the premium.

Ultra red is the best colour.
