I don't think it's unfair to price a car overdue a cambelt/dephaser far less than one that had it done recently.

Yes both cars are going to need it done at some point but one of them is far longer away and tends to point to the owner looking after it better.

Also buying the parts yourself I'd be surprised if any of the rs specialist would just fit your parts and the danger of going to a random Indy is if they don't time it up correctly your down in power .
It’s swings and roundabouts though. A car a year away from a timing belt would not bother me and the bodywork will cost you a hell of a lot more than engine maintenance. You can’t seriously expect a seller to knock £500 off for a timing belt job on a car that could be £1k-£2k. If someone offered me that I’d tell them to do one and buy a toy car that doesn’t need maintenance.

Honestly the timing thing is blown out of proportion.

Any mechanic with half a brain knows exactly how to time these cars and most of the lesser clio models are timed up the exact same way and plenty of ‘normal’ Renault’s have dephasers too. It’s nothing special to the RS doing this job and hundreds of similar jobs are done every day by garages. Even the most average garage will have timing tools and guide books for every timing job you can imagine.

I think 2k for a car needing belts doing is optimistic , I wouldn't even bother seeing it.

1k and if it drove ok I'd be happy to pay that , from experience clutch condition is far more important as there a nightmare to replace if your paying a garage .

I guess this all brings me back to the point of the thread.
With the bottom line being, they are worth what someone is prepared to pay. Full stop.
Some are over priced, some probably about right. It would appear that the bargains are scarce mind you.

That sounds a bit steep for a ‘baked bean’ that needs the belts doing. I would offer £1,750 as unless he gets lucky he won’t get £2,500 for it.

Where are you Cads? If you’re within 50 miles of Portsmouth take it to Rentech for the belts service (or for anything really). I got my 172 Cup for a lot less than market value as the belts were overdue. I picked it up and drove it straight to them (at a gingerly pace) to get the belts done and a full major service inc. gearbox oil and plugs. £700 all in inc. parts.

A year later I then had my car trailered to them to get the clutch replaced, as the clutch release bearing went (a common weak point on the F4R). I Supplied the clutch kit and they charged £200 for labour and also did the MOT and dropped it off at a nearby wheel refurb place. It was cheaper to trailer it from Brighton to Portsmouth than use a local Indy, and I knew it would be done properly.

Anyone on Cliosport will attest to their service and competence, Mike’s a great guy.

I’m in Bedfordshire, so no where near. I think I’m going to low ball him at £1500. I’ve done some rough maths and there’s nearly that again that needs spending on it.

Armstrong Autos are in Luton and advertise as Renault specialists. I think that’s where I’d look at.
A mate owns a garage but mainly does VAG as he was VW qualified. And mates rates means I’m usually at the back of the queue anyway.

Just a little rant from a frustrated potential buyer!! None of these cars are local so I'm looking a decent miles to view and buy the right car, something I have no issue doing.

I've messaged a few owners over the weekend with a view to trying to get a few answers to reasonable questions. Messages were exchanged and then suddenly they cease to reply.
One chap stopped replying when I asked if we could speak. He is over 100 miles away and before I set off on a road trip I wanted to speak with the seller. I've since found the car on FB and started another conversation. Seller replied it was still available so I messaged back, now nothing.

The other chap replied it was still available, then nothing when I asked a few basic questions not covered in the ad.

Its so frustrating. I'm trying to avoid forecourts and the dealer premium, but starting to think it may be easier.

Yeah I keep an eye on that, they seem to pop up fairly frequently but are often on other platforms as well.

Not seen anything which met my criteria and forced me to sign up so I can communicate with the seller yet though.

You don't have to pay for membership to view Cars for Sale on Cliosport.net, only for Car Parts. Just sign up for free and then you can communicate with sellers. The good thing about buying cars from active forum members is you often have years of history of absolutely everything they've done to the car, written with brutal honesty as if no potential buyers will ever read it!

I'm probably going to be selling mine soon. It's a perfect 172 Cup apart from the bodywork. The paint is actually in really good condition as it's been garaged its whole life, but it has a bonnet dent and scuffs on the front and rear bumpers from previous owner, and now a crease in the driver door from me. I've got to decide whether to get a full respray and ask £5K for it, or get fook all for it due to the cosmetic 'age related marks'. hehe

I can view adverts but the message at the bottom says I can’t reply due to insufficient privileges.

Anyway, it all happened this afternoon. Had contact from the chap who ignored me via eBay on his Stalkbook advert.
Had decent contact all day, deposit paid and train tickets north booked.
If it’s as good as it looks and he describes, I’ll be a Clio owner by Thursday.

Of course. That'll tidy this thread up a treat before the obligatory readers car thread begins.

Train ticket booked, car insurance jacked up and plumber re-arranged.

My daughter can manage in a furnace of a bedroom for a few more days, daddy needs a new car! She'll no doubt understand later in life.

Good luck with the purchase, remember to do the HPI check and listen to the engine running when it's cold and hot with the bonnet up.You'll be able to hear any knocks or the valves thrashing. Also turn the car around on full lock, this usually highlights any suspension issues. Also get a receipt, as the V5C is not proof of purchase, I've forgotten this before.

I've got a massive collection of files for the RS Clio, must be every workshop manual and how to guide in existence. PM your email and I'll wetransfer them to you.

Is it a normal radiator? Can you not just screw the return valve in if the TRV is broken?

Thanks MS, good advice. I'll admit to being a little nervous about the whole thing and have never gone in for this sort of car buying experience.
But the seller has been very decent so far and as far as I can tell, honest.

If I get there and its a pup, and I don't buy it, worst case I'll be about £160 out of pocket and will have wasted a day. So in the grand scheme of things, not horrendous.

The TRV does turn but has no effect on the internal workings of the valve. The plumber whacked it with a hammer last year when he was doing some other work and this freed it up so we could turn it or or off, I forget which way around it was.
I've given it some light love taps with a fettling stick, but I think its properly seized now.

Yes, forget the TRV and turn the lockshield valve clockwise on the other side of the rad until it doesn't turn, this will shut off the flow through the radiator. Use an adjustable spanner, or pliers will do.

Cheers mate, I’ll give that a stab tomorrow.

After completing the HPI check, which I nearly didn’t bother doing, I found this interesting table included.

It kinda confirms that prices are every so slowly on the rise. There was no private sale option on the drop down, just trade in and dealership.

I’ll document the journey north on this thread, if for no other reason than to pass the time.

So potentially new car day.
A little run to the station and currently sitting on my first of 3 trains north.

No coffee, no lunch and no WiFi. Things can only get better.

Anyone know why the pictures keep being turned??

Liking the live updates. Hopefully all goes well and it’s a nice one. Then you can look forward to filling it with protein farts all the way home.
