Train number 3, coffee number 2.
Then just a 3.5 mile run to the sellers address.
I’ll get to his town with about 30mins to wait before he finishes work.

There is a cross country option from here down to Lincoln, but then it’s really the A1 all the way home.
Given the drizzle, semi slick Yoko’s and the unfamiliar roads, I think I’ll play it safe and just get it home in one piece.

Here’s my last food and drink related image while I wait the seller to finish work.

The anticipation is building, it'd better not be a lemon!

(Thumpsnap always fks with the photo rotation, you're lucky they're only rotated 90 degrees).

The nerves are kicking in. He’ll be home in 10 hopefully.
Worst case I’ve researched the train home and it’s only £69.

AA card at the ready for the journey home.

( I’ve been looking at these again and they could be a lot of fun. We had one (172) back in the day belt snapped and it’s predecessor 16v.)

Well, obligatory filling station shot.

I nearly walked away. The bodywork was a bit of a let down but mechanically it felt solid and a trawl through the paperwork showed the belts were done last in 2019 not 2017 as I was told.

All in it’s a desirable colour with decent wheels and I paid well under what he was asking.

Will it be a costly mistake? Only time will tell I guess, it’s got a short MOT so that will be interesting.
But what I do know is it drove perfectly the 3hrs home. And the wife has taken it around the block and loves it, so I’m out the doghouse for now.

I’ll get a new thread running another night, for now, I’m tired and my ears are ringing!

Nice , is that a dent in front wheel arch or reflection ?

My old 172 cup was mega noisy when I first got it I couldn't do over 50 , a ktech stealth exhaust sorted that out.

No, just the light mate. Dent wise it’s clean.

I doubt I’ll do a 3hr drive in it very often, so might not be an issue. It’s actually louder than my old Impreza, which surprised me.

That’s beautiful, Racing Blue is one of if not the best colour for a Renault. Is it a 182 Cup?

I honestly don’t think you’ll regret it, even if you have to throw some money at it, it will become more yours with every fix and modification/upgrade.

My 172 Cup is having a new custom exhaust fitted tomorrow. The old one was not worth repairing and I felt it was overdue a treat.

More pictures tomorrow! Congratulations.

It’s not a cup, no. I’ll undoubtedly have to chuck some dough at it, but the plan is to keep it long term, so hopefully over the years it won’t really be an issue. Belts were last done in 2019 so at least that expense is a way off.

And if I want to move it on in 6 months hopefully I’m in to a level I’ll recoup most of the money back. But I don’t see that being an option.

What exhaust you going for?

Love the colour. What was the let down, rust?

I’d fit a standard exhaust, there’s no need for loud exhausts on something like this (unless you’re a kid and it’s your 1st performance car). It’s not like an Impreza that feels like a different car with a decat, just makes it sound silly (as your ears attest too now)

Looks great on the turinis, pretty much the ideal look of a clio RS that colour with the speedlines and they’re in a good colour too.

The let down is the front bumper, it’s clearly been barely filled and sprayed and to be honest would be easier and cheaper to fit a better bumper preferably in the correct colour.
And the rear arches are just starting to bubble, but it’s early enough to catch it.

Changing the exhaust is an expense I’ll deal with when required.

That looks tidy.

Get those rear door cards off and use the iphone with light on to inspect the inner arches to see the state of them.

If all good get them waxoiled. It's a simple enough job, even if you have some surface rust but worth doing now to stop any rust in its tracks.

Have you run your fingers along the rear arches and felt if there is there any packed in dirt? I noticed mine had this at various points and it can easily cause rust to start. The fuel filler cap area is also a known place but it's a bit more tricky to rectify.

Enjoy though! It does look like a peach.

Yeah the arches are filled with dirt. There’s some light bubbling on the outside, which will need doing sooner rather than later.
I’ll get the door cards off when I get a chance.
I assume they will pop off with a little leverage?

As I say mechanically it feels strong, but may need an Aux belt once I’ve gone through the paperwork. Cam belt and dephaser were done in 2019, I’d assume while at it the Aux belt would have been done. But I’ll have a good read through the paperwork.

Yes, check the auxiliary belt has been done. That’s the one that goes apparently, and takes out the timing belt which lunches the engine.

Powerflow are doing the exhaust. They have a mixed reputation but it’s actually down to the individual garage, and the fabricator. I get it the exact sound level and look that I want, and a lifetime warranty as long as I own it, so it seemed a good choice for me.

The standard 182 exhaust is pretty decent, as it was solely responsible for the extra (claimed) 10bhp over the 172. It has HUGE rear silencers on it though, which are heavy and make the exhaust note pretty dull and muted. Back in the day an Orbisoud system was the one to have, they sounded gorgeous. Not sure if they are still an option, they’re French and made the Clio Cup race car exhausts.

I had a KTEC remap on my Trophy and it made a really noticeable difference to throttle response and mid range shove, and the 5K kick was still there but it seemed to do more before it. It was Dyno tested at the conservative Surrey Rolling Road at 178bhp, when most of the other standard 182s made between 167 and 175bhp. Not a single one there that day, even with aftermarket exhausts, made 182bhp. The guy who ran it back then used to ps off a lot of owners because it seemingly read too low, but he just claimed everyone else’s dynos overread to make owners happy, and 911s, Hondas and Subarus always made or exceeded the claimed figures! The 172s there were only around 5bhp down on the 182s also.

The anthracite Turinis look great with the RB, definitely the best wheels for the Clio.

The seller was told mine has been mapped but there is no paperwork to support this, so I’m taking it with a pinch of salt.

What are folks paying for the Aux belt?? I’ve been quoted £375 but I need to try a local independent Renault specialist.

Standard exhausts are expensive & don’t last long apparently.
I fitted a BTB to mine 8-9yrs ago along with a Ph1 cat, it’s not too loud by any means.

Thought the 182 used different manifolds to achieve the extra 10bhp claimed?

Rolling road results interesting, I’ve always been led to believe that most std 172’s produce around 155bhp.

Yep, the aux belt is the real scare. My timing belt was last changed 9 years ago! Not ideal in itself and certainly not suggesting it’s ok to do but the only time I’ve seen a ‘timing belt gone’ on a clio was when the aux broke and took out the timing belt.

Get a genuine tensioner and belt off eBay franchised dealer for £95.
