I just got a quote for some work on 2002 renault clio 1.6 16v.

800 quid to change the gasket that goes around the valve area. ie NOT the head gasket....but the equivalent of the rocker cover gasket...whatever it is called.

Now this isn't a jag with an oil refinery to remove to get at anything....so how can this take the equiv of 12 hrs labour!?

Anyone any idea what a relaistic price shoudl be?

This was a renault dealer.

They are a pig to do.........the time quoted will be the "book time", find another garage with a lower labour rate and you could half the cost

Hiya,

The ICME book time according to my Autodata CD is 6hrs for the rocker cover gasket. WOW! How about going to an indipendant?

Seems steep, I was charged under £200 to do the cam cover gasket on a Puma 1.7

I am always amazed why people do not go to independent garages. There are some good people out there that do a pro job and could and will save you a hell of a lot of money. Just go on word of mouth. I got a quote from Ford to change a "Idle control valve" on my Fiesta. How mush did they want. £200. How hard is the job. Undo to screw, 5-min MAX it was that easy.

I did the bloody job myself,. Saved myself £160.

I also needed the engine coolant changed and a replacement sensor. Ford £220. Local:£30. All I had to do was supply the parts.

I will be finding another garage for sure.
I'll get a written quote and then just go elsewhere.

It would prob be a good time to sell the car...unfirtunately just spejnt money on 2 new tyres and service which i would nto get back. irritating!

Thanks for all the replies. The 6 hr one was very intersting....must have a chat to the renault dealer abotu that onme :-)
