Hi John.

They are very easy to turbocharge, like you say they are near identical to the T16. I can source forged pistons like mine for around £500. A friend is currently selling a brand new turbo setup very similar to mine for £1800ish (manifold, down pipe, turbo, gaskets etc)

The only other major modification would be solid lifters and you should see around 400bhp. Give me a shout if want any more advice/info!

Many thanks for the site and to everyone else for all the replies. I am going to be working off quite a strict budget, to begin with, so was thinking of spending on the internals and bottom end initally as that will allow me to upgrade later without having to completly strip and rebuild. I was thinking that forged pistons would be a must and probably an inlet cam but that would be about all to begin with. The rest of the engine would be checked and then rebuilt using either standard parts or parts robed form elsewear, cheaply! I am reading Grahan Bell's book onforced induction to make sure that I do not make any really bad mistakes and was plannign to try to try and "scrapyard challenge" for most of the other bits or make them myself. Your manifold is a work of art and looks gorgeous but is a little out of my budget for the moment. I will try and get some ideas and run them by you as soon as I can get my head around the science!

Crikey. Looks more like a jet engine stuck onto that engine in the picture on the website biggrin

It is rather big Dave, that photo makes it look ever so slightly bigger than it really is!

Right, nearly got the engine out and will have to purchase an engine stand and start on that! So I have a couple of questions.

Am I right in thinking that, baring nastyness when I strip the engine, the original crank and con rods will suffice? I will fit forged pistons, both to lower the CR and to prevent them melting. With a good look at the bores and a re-bore / hone as necessary will that be sufficient for the bottom end? I am thinking that money spent on the bottom end will never be wasted and should make up-grading easier. (head work, proper manifold, matched turbo, etc) I will also have to fit an aftermarket ECU, emerald springs to mind, to allow for proper setup and tuning. Is this a sensible approach?

Any thoughts or advice gratefully recieved,

Crank and rods will be fine, fit some decent bearings though. Emerald is definately the way forward, they don't cost much and have all the features you will need.

How much does it cost these days for a decent set of bearings/rings/seats etc for an Mi16 2.0 engine? (ie bottom-end recon)

Got one on 120k miles, not sure if it's had head work but it looks tidy, but it'd be handy to just pop new bits on the bottom maybe, since it will be used rarely and in anger, and is getting light modding for power anyway.

Well bearings come in at around £120, pistons £300, crank grind £90, gaskets and seals £130. Labour wise you'd be looking at 8 hours max @ £40 per hour. So all in with VAT £1128. That is a worst case scenario though!

We do tend to find most of these engines need pistons unfortunately... But if it doesn't and you do it yourself the cost isn't that bad.
