106 rallye - info?

Hi all,

New to this forum! I've been thinking for a while about getting something a little more suited to the daily drive in and around London. My first choice for a big auto barge, whilst fun and relaxing, doesn't really seem to cut it on fuel economy / cheap to run / ease of parking...

Been thinking of maybe an MX-5.

Then I started thinking about Rallyes. I've always like the idea of a traditional pared down lightweight hot hatch - cheap to run/insure, easy to park, less nickable (no alloys ), proper back to basics stuff!

So I just wanted to find out a little info.

They seem to hold their value quite well, but as far as I can see there was a Series 1 (with a 1.3) and a Series 2 (did that have the same 1.6 16v as the GTi or was it just an 8v?).

What are the differences? How quick are they? I assume they're more about handling and lightness a la the original Mini, but a 0-60 of around 8 would be nice!

Phase 2 was a 1.6 8v TU engine. It is similar to the 1.3 in the way it revs, do not confuse this engine with the 8v TU lump fitted to all the others, its much better!

I chipped one recently and it transformed the car once more, taking the thing to nearly 8krpm and it flew! Fantastic handling to boot makes this a good car to rival the original 205 GTi's

No problem, btw I decided that the Series 2 with a gti engine conversion made most sense...

Far too well, IMO. The S2s were overpriced relative to the GTi back when I was looking for one 4 years ago and it's just silly now. If they'd still been selling them new at under 10k (a substantial amount less than the GTi) I'd have gone for one like a shot - but I don't see any added value when the price difference is the other way. The weight difference is small, they both run the same brakes, same suspension, many have the same power steering, only the GTi gets a better engine which more than makes up for the weight penalty. It's got a better interior too.

The S1 is a lot more "special" but finding one that isn't thrashed to death now is pretty tricky. And again, they seem very expensive for what they are. For cheap around-town fun the S1 XSi is great too, but there are more decent ones around and they actually go for sensible prices.

Don't get me wrong, the Rallyes are great, but I really don't understand why they attract such a premium over their (ultimately, very similar) siblings.

heres mine daily run about and track day terorist weapon did have 1.3 lump but now has 1.6 8v lump with lots performance mods great little cars mine was bog standard when i had mine but wanted to have some thing i could use on track to but even in standard form pretty quick
