If that was you, I tip my hat to you. I hadnt come across this model pug before but I have to say I was mighty impressed with its poke and apparent handling. I was wrestling my black F150 Lightning around after you but I must admit I had the foot the firewall a few times to stay with you.
In light of this incident, Ive been looking at this model with some interest.
Can anyone tell me which is the higher spec car, an S16 or a Gti6?

S16 was basically a version of the 306 to homologate it for rallying. 2.0 16v 155bhp I think there is a homologation plate found in the boot. AFAIK a limited run of cars.

GTI-6 Similar engine 6 speed box more refined, was the range topper.
Rallye is a GTI-6 without the goodies - lighter and apparently better balanced.

All street sleeper machines and rated as a fantastic drivers cars.

Just got an S16 as a first 'proper' car and I'm mightily impressed by it, but I think the 6 speed 'box would be a nice addition...

with the 6 speeder you lose a little left hand lock.

Aye the gti6 is quite a deceptive little car for what it's spec sheet suggests!

You loose RH lock with the 6spd gearbox, it's surprising at first how bad it is, you get used to it though.

Think it's real magic comes due to the gearbox, the ratio's are so perfect for fast road use which means you can use the power more of the time vs some other hot hatches with only 5 ratio's. At 40mph say you have a choice of 2nd,3rd,4th,5th or 6th, and all will pull with decent vigour for what is only a small 2.0 engine.

Tempted myself to go back to one, but they are a car best enjoyed doing what you saw them doing. Drive them normally and they feel just like any other hatchback, so the costs involved over any other hatchback can put you off (thats what put me off)...

Sounds daft but I'd have one as a weekend car over a day to day car.

A decent Rallye with a K&N filter is probably cheap thrills for the weekend personified, and rare, only 498 ever made afaik...

So, does the GTI-6 rack have different stops to the s16 to limit the lock?
Definitely considering doing the swap at some point. Would it be best to just put a gti rack on or to just put some stops on the standard rack?

Cheers!

6 speed box is the cause of reduced steering.

Yeah the rack is different, it has a RH lockout of about 1/2 a turn less from the end of the RH lock. Basically the 6spd box sticks into the front half of the wheel arch of the nearside wheel. So on RH lock the front of the wheel fouls it. You only notice it when parking or doing 3 points or very tight rights. People look at you oddly at mini roundabouts sometimes

I'm sure if you know how you could put in something to stop it turning too far, or if you really wanted fit the rack from a gti6 (big ish job)... think my brother has one for sale but not sure. Also the gti6 box (if thats what your fitting nightdriver) has two extra mounting lug/bolts on the bell housing which mate up to the enlarged end-plate of the Gti6 sump, which is also baffled to prefent oil surge/starvation... pretty sure the gti6 sump fits the mi16/s16 lump...

I think the 6spd box goes on even without the lower lugs plugged, it's just what a moaning ins.co would say if the worst did happen rolleyes

You also have a cable lock-out that needs wiring into the gear-level so you can get reverse on the 6spd box.

Sounds like your making a pretty fun little car

Good luck with it!

God knows I've been caught out like that few times, but I love my Rallye (in Black, which is the best colour!! ) I think Mr Whippy has summed it up perfectly
