Can anyone help with this one?

I've been told a slightly unbelievable story of an almost stock 205 1.9 GTI (rag top) that's capable of speeds of up to 170 mph. Somehow I struggle to believe that a 205 could do these kinds of speeds without some significant alterations.

What would need to be done to the car in order for it to be able to achieve these kinds of speeds if indeed it's possible?

I am in no way attempting to belittle the 205.. It was and remains a truly great car. But I am suspicious as to the owners claims

I would wager that at 170mph the rag top on a 205 (were the convertibles not called CTI's?) would not last very long?!

It would need a silly T16 motor in it, then i would worry about the hood staying on

Ive been very fast in an MI16 205 and it is surprisingly stable, but it was a tin top, and i dare say at any more speed vibrations would start to play a big role.

No chance without serious power, as said a T16 might do the trick at circa 300bhp. Not quite what you would call standard!

P.S. a 205 GTi speedo goes nowhere near 170

It would need big changes to the gearing or have a very high rev limit.

My old 205 gti turbo would sit on the rev limiter in 5th and that was no where near 170mph

Basically, the story is dogpoo, unless it's talking km/h

Mmm... We have hit just over 160mph in a GTi, GPS verified, and the front started to get very very light. That was running a 6 lump with laughing gas at silly RPM. Not advisable really!

Can't see a T16 doing that, they don't like revs. Peak power on mine is at 5500.

kilometers an hour?

I was originally told it was 270 kmh so I converted the figure into proper money. Ok, I know that 270 kmh is 167.8 mph but it's close enough to 170 mph to make little difference.

There was a 205 near me with 450bhp, it was nicknamed purple ronnie due to it's colour (might be able to search it somewhere), it's been broken now though, ran a 306 gti-6 2.0 engine which was turbo'd. Not sure on top speed but it was high, not 170mph though (the owner bought a skyline afterwards to crack that). I only saw it once on the road, and it was indeed very fast.

Xaero, Ians car was the car I was talking about. Was never 450bhp or turbocharged though!
