Since my back-box decided to have a little argument with the tarmac earlier today I figure that I better get something new, as right now the Clio sounds like a Nova with a aftermarket baked-bean exhaust kit.

Any recommendations of something that will sound fruity, last well and possibly add a few bhp?

Curiously, after placing the back-box in the boot didn't seem to lose any power, but gained 0.6 mpg on the way home, so I guess something freer flowing might be in order...

Ahh the common weakness of a 172 Cup strikes again!! hehe

I'm glad that did'nt happen when you let me loose in it !!! eek

As far as exhaust choices go you have the usual suspects really, Magnex are good quality but can be a tad on the loud side (I had a magnex and de-cat on my old 306 Rallye but took the magnex off after 2 weeks as it was doing my head in!!). Scorpion SS exhausts are really good, quieter than Magnex but just as good quality if not better. Had one on a Renault 21 Turbo a few years back and they are highly rated on the Pug 306 sites.

If you're on Cliosport.net there should be a few more options talked about on there. The 172 Cup i wasnt allowed to drive i was telling you about had an aftermarket exhaust but cant remember which one it was.

I dont think you'll find many systems that actually add any power. I remember a test a number of years ago albeit on a Pug 206 Gti 1.9, The standard system actually came out with the best power figures when compared to all the alternatives..!!

I have a custom made Pro-speed cat back system on my Cup. Very happy with it. They're based in Cardiff; was a bit of trip for me but well worth it IMO. They have a very good rep on cliosport.net. I have'nt heard anything negative about their 172 systems. You can have as loud or quiet sound as you want. Mine is very subtle at idle and normal driving, but with a nice roar when booting it. Lifetime guarantee too.

www.pro-speedexhausts.com

Only downside is that as it is a custom system it has not been tested for power gain like an off the shelf system generally is. But it is definately much more free flowing than the OE exhaust, and my car feels a touch more poky and responsive .Made good figures on a RR compared to other 172/182's too (on the same day at the same RR )

I originally replaced the OE back box (after it fell off!) with a K-tec stealth system. I found it too boomy in normal driving, but this may have been exagerrated by the sports cat on my car - many people regard this as a fairly quiet exhaust. In terms of power & responce it felt much the same as the Pro-speed.

The other question is do you want a visible tail pipe or a 'stealth'? (hidden behind the bumper like the OE exhaust). Pro-speed offer a visible pipe too and will cut your bumper to give a neat fit.

Yozzasport do some fecking loud systems if thats your boat!!

I bought a k-tec stealth exhaust last year.

They sound great under hard acceleration, but it does drone a bit at Mway cruising speeds. This isn't a problem when I'm on my own...just turn up the stereo but its a bit much when you have passengers.

However I've noticed that k-tec have redesigned this system and are claiming they've addressed this issue. Might be worth a look if you don't want to start cutting holes in your bumper.

Cheers

have a k-tec pn my 172 - sports cat and stealth - sounds glorious - not cheap combined with induction kit and remap (£1250) but adds about 20bhp and it flies..revs to 7800 which is 70 in 2nd and 100 in third..
p.s. it's for sale at £4750.. it's a 2000 W reg, silver with blue alcaantara, and air con, 1 previous owner, full history inc. cambelt and only 45000 miles.. havent advertised it yet.. but happrier to let it go to a fellow pistonheader..
anyone interested?

It is a ph1 so does have longer gear ratios, and has raised limiter. Must be absolutely screaming though!

- just hi-jacking your thread as I have a simular question;

Whats the quietest exhaust you can get for a 172 Cup, mine has some dreadful aftermarket thing hanging on it at the moment which makes so much noise it hurts my ears, I do a fair bit of motorway driving so needs to be quiet at high speeds too

Thanks

I've got a blueflame one. I find it acceptably quiet at normal speeds, not much more noisy than standard to be honest. It gets noticably louder if you get it hot by booting it a lot, but thats to be expected. I think its a decent product for the money paid (I paid £235 for a cat back system). If anything it feels a little more pokey at lower revs, and seems to rev a little better towards the top end. Not going to claim a power increase, because i honestly don't know, but it seems fine to me.

OE replacement from Renault.

(Would'nt advise that - they're made of cheese, not very cheap, and fairly restictive)

Personally I'd go to a [italic]good[/italic] custom place. Might not suit your budget though as they are not the cheapest. K-tec stealths are generally considered fairly subtle as far as aftermarket exhausts go.

Any idea what is on it at the moment? - may help to gauge the noise level your happy with

Take a pic of it tomorrow.

The problem with the exhaust isn't so much the loudness but the way it drones on the motorway. I don't mind a loud exhaust (I was looking at getting a de-catted Cerby with sports pipes!), it's the pitch that it's at. It also looks like it's been badly put on. Ideally what's needed is something which will let the engine breathe but not hum like mad on the motorway. Is that possible?

(C-Cup being MOH btw)

Cheers guys, am still looking but haven't yet decided as there are so many mixed reviews on cliosport.net, whatever it seems that a back-box by itself is not something I'll be able to go for, as the only ones I've seen are twin pipe below the bumper affairs.

My preference is to keep the look of my little Q car rather than Chav it up (I've seen a 4" exhaust pipe model!), so to that end the the KTR stealth seems to be the best choice (£299), although I've heard mixed reviews, so have not fully decided yet...

Otherwise a recessed unit might be the way to go (£325 for the KTR one), not really interested in 182 style twin pipes (£370 for the KTR ones), after all the 172 Cup was the leaner and meaner car, adding extra pipes would only increase its weight

Blueflamne have their £235 deal available through clipsport.net but I've heard a few bad things about them, and their website says they are sole provider for TVRs exhaust, which given the quality of some of those is not a good selling point!

Other options are YozzaSport at £399, Magnex at £339 and ProSpeed at £318.

That tends to be the way I think of it, a V8 or straight 5 will always sounds good so amplify it, but a 4-pot drone from an engine designed for shopping trollies never going to be that musical, so a little but of grunt through the induction and exhaust system is all I want to hear when I'm having fun, as most of the time I'd rather listen to the stereo.

A very good choice indeed, although the bloke who bought mine didn't think so and re-catted it banghead

PS 350wedge, cheers for the text mate.

Thats the problem I encountered when i fitted a Magnex to my old 306 Rallye. The resonance and booming in the car at a constant 60mph or so was a nitemare. Used to get out of the car with a serious headache!!

It would resonate the interior rear view mirror so much i couldnt see anything with it. There could have been a herd of charging wildebeast behind me and i'd never have known !!!yikes

The noise under acceleration was great though!! Car was decatted too which didnt help matters. In the end took the magnex off after two weeks use but kept the decat on. At least i could hear the K&N induction roar again..hehe

Tripps,

That was exactly my thinking when I came to choose an exhaust. Mine does not drown out the induction noise - which I like - but has a nice note when pressing on - perfect. The K-tec stealth I had drowned out the induction at low speed so it had to go (as I have said previously; the sports cat probably caused extra resonance). Did sound awesome at high revs however evil

I had the same dilemma as you when I used cliosport.net to research different exhausts. There are a lot of conflicting opinions on what sounds best down to personal taste. However you can at least get a good idea of any build quality related problems there might be.

If you are ever near Reading at the weekend or in the evening I'd happily take you for a quick spin if it would help your decision

Funny though that the ones who slag them off have a vested interest in selling their own exhaust systems.

OK, they aren't the best out there, but what do you expect for £235? Its better than OEM, I can tell you that much.

But if you want a recessed one then it makes sense to go for the KTR one.

To be fair it was a mate who warned me off them as he had problems with mine, I also worried when I visited the Bluefame website and they mentioned they are sole creators of TVR exhausts... I know these have had a number of issues on recent models, so that didn't fill me with confidence either.

I'm thinking pretty much KTR stealth at this point, just need to find somewhere local to get it fitted and I'll be sorted for next week.
