306 xsi - 8v or 16v?

Can somebody clarify for me whether the 306 xsi is an 8 or 16 valve engine. I always thought that the gti6, rallye and s16 were the 16 valve models and the xsi had a 2 litre 8 valve unit. Browse the classifieds however and there are a multitude of 'xsi 16v' listed. Try ebay for example.

I had a 1998 16v XSi, when they were face lifted in about 1997(?)they went 16v. 138bhp instead of 125bhp I think. Cracking cars but be warned, they can have a very heavy clutch which is a pain in traffic.

I see, thanks for that. Does that mean that the GTi6's extra 30bhp comes purely from mapping?

My brother has a 2 litre 16v model, but they are apparently available in 1.8 8v and 16v versions as well as the 2 litre 8v to go with the 16v.

That, along with more lairy cams and induction I think.

there is an 8v and a 16v XSI, the 8v was from 1994 until 1996/1997 and the 16v was from 1997 until they were discontinued.
essentialy the later XSI engine and the GTI 6 engine are the same apart from apparantly different induction, cams and the gearing is different,the earlier engine is a 205 1.9 engine bored out to 2 litres so ive been told.

1.9 engine is alloy block and linered, 2 litre is cast block.
