May be in the market for a good size estate, pref a diesel to keep the fuel costs down.

What are they like? Seems like I could lay my hands on a reasonable 2001 DCi Sports Tourer (the estate) for £3500-4000. What about reliability, servicing costs, etc? How do the engines cope with mileage and what sort of economy should be expected?

Had an 03 2.2 dci for less than 3 years to 105 000 mls

Now have an 2.0 dci GT – may 06 with 50 000 get about 40 mpg but it gets driven, recent drives have seen it down at 38 mpg

I don’t think they are that bad and someone who sat next to me for two days and over 600 miles thought they were ok as well, I’d avoid 1.9 they are reported to have problems (turbo) and are under powered, partic 120 bhp

Mine never really had anything go wrong (turbo failure is supposedly common), had electrical gremlins cruise would switch itself off but that was in the later years of the 03 and i was due to change it anyway, cat went at 58000 and cost £800, usual wear and tear, honest john web site has a run down of faults, and only the bad ones get whinged at, the jd power survey put them towards the bottom, but my experience doesn’t reflect that.

Dynamique (??Spelling) or above is better kitted out, reasonably comfy tell by silver end on door trim or annotation in glove box

They are not brilliant typical French in handling, wollowy but it depends what you want, its not a sports car then neither is anything in the same car segment despite its pretensions/and what anyone says having rented a mondeo st 2.2 for several weekends and vectra sri,

they are dead cheap second hand, depreciate like a stone – not something that I worry about, will become cheaper as the new one is due in the autumn

Did have long service interval of 18 000 mls, but changed the oil at every 9000 anyway (current car is on a 9000 schedule so I know the dealer very well), it did or does everything ok, looks different to all the others, estate looks better than the saloon

Timing belt needs doing at 72 000 well mine did on the diesel, obviously first NCAP 5*
Poor forward vision to side due to thick a/b post (never know which) card ignition can be a pain, easy to loose/break as i know
