I'm guessing 15"?

Also which tyres are best suited for fast road and track?

ps

Turini seem to be mentioned here and there - available in various sizes:

I'm not sure if a 15" wheel greatly improves handling or not. They are obviously lighter (usually). Normally people have a set of 15" for track work because the tyres are cheaper.

Speedline Turinis (16" were OE on the 172 Cup and 182 Trophy; thats why K-tec sells them as they are a popular mod for any 172/182. They are lighter than the standard 172/182 wheels and deliver better turn-in. They are also much better for brake cooling than the 182 wheels I believe.

Theres various cut-slick style tyres that are good on track but I don't know much about them. Check out cliosport.net. Lots of people on there who will be able to help you with tyre choice.

15" is meant to give best handling and steering feel, but I think thats because the tyres are narrower, as fitted as standard to the mk1 172.

I reckon 15" are probably the way to go.

You should be able to pick up a set of OZ ultraleggeras for just over £400 which will be a about 2kg lighter each than the 16" turinis fitted to the Trophy.

Theres not a huge range of track options for the 16" rim, whereas with the 15" you can pick up ex clio cup slicks, or a larger range of road legal cut slick type tyres.

Thanks for you help guys. Although I decided not to get one now. I was looking into the options before I even drove one!

Anyway, I'm just back from a test drive in a 182, with only 14k miles. It just felt too slow and rattley for me. So I'm back to german cars with my tail between my legs...

shame the mk1 172 is the worst handling of the ClioSport models wink

tyres are the same width though, 195/50 R15 on the mk1 and 195/45 R16 on the mk2/Cup/182

I used to have a 172 Cup and used 15's on track, no noticeable difference in handling, just meant that I didn't mash my road tyres and replacement track tyres are in a cheaper size
