M'colleagues
Like the sap that I am, I got all excitable and bought a 2001 Red Label at auction. Didn't see it, test it, etc.

So I've got it home, and it has a number of DAFT problems. Can you lovely people help me fix them - point me in the right direction etc?

1. It was jump started as it had been standing. The EML light came on and it seemed to be in limp mode. I cleared the codes and it seems fine. Is jump starting a route to mangled electrics?

2. The glovebox won't open hehe I have tried both keys and it seems stuck. Any ideas to remedy that without cack handedly ruining things?

3. The throttle pedal seems VERY stiff. It's actually hard to modulate the throttle. Is this common?

4. There is a bit of chrome off one of the door handles. Easy to re-chrome these? Is taking the handle off a weeks worth of effort??? hehe

5. The headlamp has condensation in the cover - easy fix?

6. I'm not sure if the head gasket/camshaft problem has been rectified. Should I be fearful of this, or bite the bullet and get it all fixed before it explodes. I've had this before with a Porsche 996 - with the IMS/RMS thing. I left it and nothing happened.

Any pointers/advice/shoulder to cry on welcomed.

hi.
congratulations on your new passion.
pics?

1. Is jump starting a route to mangled electrics? NEVER jump start a car esp 'modern' cars. leave to trick charge. and/or watch a vid on how to connect jump leads, let the car that is donating the power run for 10 mins letting the flat battery surface charge and then attemp to crank.

2. The glovebox won't open hehe I have tried both keys and it seems stuck. does the barrel turn? it is cable/latch operated, so it could need adjustment. if stuck, then surrounding trim needs to be removed and cable tugged on to open and then cable adjusted.

3. The throttle pedal seems VERY stiff. It's actually hard to modulate the throttle. i think the pedal links to a unit under the floor( could be wrong). there is a pivot bolt that can get corroded. a pain to remove.

4. There is a bit of chrome off one of the door handles. Easy to re-chrome these? if you know a good re-plating firm then great. to remove you have to remove door card. not straight forward unless you have service manual.

5. The headlamp has condensation in the cover - easy fix? the headlamp unit should have a plastic sheet on top ( see pic) . if these plastic sheets leak due to age or just not being present then condensation can occur. i would remove unit. dry it ( in other cars i place in very very lightly heated oven 70c). replace plastic( this is literally a plastic sheet) sheet. monitor.

6. I'm not sure if the head gasket/camshaft problem has been rectified. check this thread:

if possible find a good RR/Bentley specialist. you will allows need one.

hope this helps.

FWIW, removal of the door handles is quite straightforward. This is part of the removal sequence in the workshop manual...
