I always read my dipstick by first removing it and wiping the measuring area to ensure no false readings... however doing this in the R56 pulls lots of oil up the dipstick tube. Inserting the dipstick straight back in just covers it again with oil making it impossible to have any confidence in the reading.

By giving the oil in the tube a chance to drain back into the engine you are ensuring you have a clean dipstick and tube to accurately measure the oil level.

It works. Pull the dipstick and give it a wipe. Cover the dipstick hole and have a cup of tea... come back and read the oil level as normal.

Of course, makes perfect sense now... and obvious, cheers.

I’m getting the hang of my new ‘craven’ dipper, used it today just as I would an old Austin car dipper.
Worked as it should and I noted our cooper had used very little oil over the past 500 miles or so.
Likely still trade it and buy a Kia ceed tdi.

I have the Cravenspeed too, but to make it really easy to read I found that Drift's advice above is the way to go - and I likely could have saved the cost of this item, or filed the standard one like also suggested if really necessary.

Taking the dipstick out, cleaning it and then *waiting* allows the dipstick tube to clear of oil, then one simple dip and a very clear level appears on the stick. I've only done this once now but the difference was night and day. As noted, it does take a little planning rather than just a quick check (which it ought to be).

Another vote for the 'pull it, wait 5 mins' technique.

Definitely no need to buy a diesel Kia...

It looks like my other half would prefer the Kia tbh, more room and better ride quality. I expect the mini to be gone sometime this month. I’m not fussed over it as I have my fiat coupe for fun.
