Hi,


My 2012 Mini Cooper S was running fine until Monday when overtaking there was a loss of power, half engine light popped up & stayed up, feels like a misfire, won't rev past 4000 and if you hold steady revs the half engine light turns to an engine light (all black inside). (I found this all out on the short drive back home)

No obvious issue in the engine bay, oil and water seem okay.

It's under warranty so it will be going in to Mini to get looked at as I only purchased it at the end of January, but I thought I'd start this to let you all know what it turns out to be.

I'm away at sea now until the end of July so won't know until then, but will be interested to hear anyone's views.

Need a code reader to see what's gone amiss, might be just a sensor, or more involved, but without the code, you're guessing.

Sounds exactly like the High Pressure Fuel Pump. I had the same symptoms when mine went 4 years ago.

As said, get the codes checked.

Agreed. Quiet an easy fix, even for the most technically inept.
OEM HPFPs can source on Ebay for ~£300, much cheaper than BMW prices.

Thanks for that chaps, as I said it's under warranty so will be depositing it at Westerly Bridgwater once I get home.

28000 miles, seems early for a failure? It is also 8 years old. Depends on which way you look at it.

That'll be an age thing in that case. Saying that (and touching wood) mine is still on it's original HPFP, it's a 57 plate with 78k miles.

I do have a spare HPFP on the shelf in the garage though for when it does let go! Neo Bros are doing genuine ones for the N14 engine for £311, £595 for the N18.

I keep ours in the garage....

It's been on non run-flats for 5 years, only had one slow puncture. As it's only used for local journeys mainly, I feel ok about not carrying the spare about.Quick call home if the tyre can't be reinflated.

The weird thing is there is no specific room for a spare, but there is a jack and wheel brace confused

Well I had it looked at by Westerly Bridgwater.
Coil pack on Number 4 Cylinder.

All well now and hopefully nothing else rears it’s head!

This happened to ours. It just happened overnight.It stunk of petrol and was missing. I loosely remember that one of the plugs was off colour and maybe wet, changed out the plugs and coils. NGK from Opie £100. Ran very nicely after.

Just shows how random these faults can be, could have easily been a fuel pump issue costing several hundreds, or a set of coils (I paid £64 delivered for some Bosch the other day) without a code reader these days, trying to diagnosis a fault is a waste of time.

That's good news. Only just seen this thread but might be worth getting a spare. I had the same problem and a second one went a few weeks later. I then changed the others and carry the two old ones as spare.

When a coilpack goes, you're pretty much guaranteed the rest of them will fail soonish afterwards... I changed all 4 when one failed, couldn't be bothered with a trickle of coilpack failures over the next few months!

My spare HPFP is still on the shelf btw.

Mine too ..... wondering when it will be needed, 76k and still 7000psi on idle so far so good.

Mine has developed an oil leak instead so the little st is staying on the driveway for 3 weeks while I go to work. I'm suspecting rear main seal as the top of the engine is dry as a bone, so that's subframe, gearbox, clutch and flywheel out to get to it.

Oh well, it's a chance to stick in a wavetrac and and uprated clutch/flywheel combo biggrin
