Our Mini cooper (2009) developed a fault, start procedure but pressed starter button and nothing, Then it clears itself and all OK. Rinse and repeat a few times so I take it in to our local indie. They diagnose the electronic steering lock as the problem and component needs replacing at £507.
That’s done but now find the electronic cache? unit has failed and so cannot code key to new steering lock, so that’s £367. Stuck now and have to pay nearly £1k for being able to start the car.
Looked up car value at £1350. I really dislike all the worthless electronics on modern cars.

Obviously I don’t know all the details but the key doesn’t need coding to the steering lock on one of them - sometimes you need to reset the lock counter but it has no bearing on the key.

For anyone in future that has a problem with a mini steering lock and needs to replace it - bmw sell just the steering lock rather than the whole steering column with the steering lock - but u have to request it specifically (less than £100 rather than hundreds for the compete thing)

It sounds a bit like they have replaced the steering lock and realised the fault is still there so are now fishing around for what else it could be.

I could be wrong tho…
