Gentlefolk,

I have been given a Mini Cooper for the next three days as I am spending Wednesday and Thursday up at the Commercial vehicle show at Birmingham NEC. After getting the keys and knowing its a company car awaiting return I was a little underwhelmed by the amount of petrol in it; but downright flabbergasted at the lack of oil (about half an inch of very black sooty stuff left).
The handbook says I need BMW longlife - 01 or BMW longlife - 98 at a pinch if I need to top it up. WTF??? - Can I get away with putting synthetic 10W-40? As I will not even fire her up without some oil in there.

on our One we used Castrol Magnatec 5-30w. I think any 5-30w (check the handbook though) will be fine. Cheaper the better as its a company car!

Cheers folks - in the end I had to put some shell helix stuff in that met the Acea standard BMW quoted somewhere in the hand book in very small writing (only stuff at the garage had within walking distance).
BTW - great fun - been hooning down the A507, my apologies to anyone who may have been offended being over taken by a little red mini cooper
