Oh Dear! Missus has gone to friends with my daughter and I was at a loss what to do with baby boy and his 4 year old brother and it was raining. Just because it was easy to park there, I ended up at the BMW showroom.

4 year old was very impressed with the shiny new cars with the same emblem as my battered 8 year old 3 series. He loved it there, much better than the park or the big Currys, my wet weather alternative.

Lo and behold we ended up amongst a gaggle of brand new Mini Cooper Ss. They look great and seem to be put together very well, nice leather and interiors and a million different options and colours. Not sure that there would be any room for rear passengers, not such a problem in my case, but the kids legs would be permanently bashing and scuffing the front seats.

The examples in the showroom were all loaded and around the £21/22K mark but after the Boxster and the Land Rover, it seems like small change. Still a lot of dosh for a small car but I will reserve judgement until the test drive. Unfortunately the half hour with the salesman variety as they only have one demo car and they seem to be selling like hot cakes to people who are not bothered about what they are actually like to drive.

Some people have too much money and no sense.

I'll take the drive then string them along until I get at least a day in the car as I should not be buying a another new vehicle at the moment anyway.

4 year old was very disappointed that we didn't buy a car there and then

He is as impatient and impulsive as me

Anyway, I am sorely tempted.

Yeah! the Boxster was a great car but a shocker depreciation wise and it seems that I got out just in time as the prices have dived. The problem being a one year old car almost always goes back to the dealer as people are nervous about handing over that much cash to a stranger. The dealer, of course, shafts you and then sells on for massive profit.

When someone tells you that a car will be worth 60% of its purchase price in 3 years time, they mean dealer's price.

As others have said, go for it! (providing you like the thing after the test drive!!)

I know its not on the same level, but I have just come from a Diesel C2 to a 06 ONE D and I am loving every minute of it! Finding myself taking the long route all the time!

You only live once!

I have a 55 plate Mini at the moment and looked at a new Cooper S yesterday, I have to say I didn't like it as much, the interior looks a bit silly, kind of like a cartoon version of my one with everything bigger and it appears to have no more space in the back or boot too.

Its my one issue with the new look, the centre console. I like the ultra big speedo but not the silver bits that look too plasticky.

I had a look at an '05 model and much prefer the look of the old console.

i think the mini is the most overtated car. Missus had a Cooper with Chilli pack and loads of extras. The interior has the worst build quality i have ever seen! it rattled and creaked and groaned. you could push the dash forwards and backwards with your hands, everything felt really low quality. We had a new one fitted under warrantee and it still rattled. Plus the stearing rack went at 22K miles! And utterly guttless in a straight line. Handled well, thats my only plus. Got rid and got a Clio 172 CUP, better car in every way, and its FRENCH!!! aaaaggghhhh. Just dont expect a BMW!

Balloon deflating rapidly.

Thats why I need a decent testdrive as they seem well put together in the showroom but what about after a few thousand miles. My BMW 3 series does not creak or groan even after 8 years and an admittedly below average 65K miles.

Anyone know of a company that rents out the new S or is it too soon?

The dealers are very reluctant to let you take a car out, when i was looking for mine i also looked at the Audi A3 and Golf both of which was given a full test drive on my own, could have the car a full day if i wanted, loved the Audi but couldn't afford the spec i wanted, thought the golf was good but couldn't live with the looks. Got a secondhand full spec S in the end but still only got a short test drive.

I hired the old MCS from Guy Salmon, they gave me an upgrade to the S convertable.
Went out the next week and got myself a Cooper S
A weeks test drive was great. Cost me £400 however

I ran a One D for about 8 months and loved it. Granted it is never going to be a world beater off the line but a great drive and stunning economy

Don't know where you are but the dealer in Reading was more than happy to give test drives. I had three, one on a whim, one when I was serious and one with sports suspension. All in I was in the cars for about 6 hours, they are great!

And as for Clio Vs Cooper. If it wasnt an S then you are not comparing like with like. I owned a Clio Cup and it was poo... See the thread on French section, it fell apart and I didnt thinkit was that good. The S easily feels as quick, seems to better built although time will tell and is certainly better quality.

My new S will be here this month...
