Hi everyone,

I've been lurking for a few months and decided to try out some passwords for my nickname that I used a few years back and I'm back on again.

Anyway I'm now the proud owner of an 02 cooper in red with a few toys on. Just got a few questions. Can I change the temp readout on the rev counter computer to read in C instead of F and same with the air con temp. Also why doesn't the computer display the speed. I've seen it on other minis but mine won't select it.

Any help gratefully received.

Thanks

Im sure you can change the a/c an display temp to fairnheit rather than celcius but not sure how. The reason for you only getting temp on the rev counter is that the car doesnt have the on board computer

Thanks Loui,

My car does have the computer on it because is has the average mpg, average speed, range left in tank and the outside air temp. But there is no speed on there.

There is also a strange whine from the engine but i understand this to be the power steering pump. It does seem quite loud though.

I took it to my local dealer to get the auto locking activated and I thought there were other things they could alter too by plugging in a computer but he said the door locks was the only thing they can do on the MINIs. Is this right? I never had it done cos it was £30 and for that I could have another 3 things done if it was possible.

The car actually is my future wife's (we get married in 3 1/2 weeks!) car and she has called him Mickey (I think its quite good really). I wasn't that struck on MINIs before we got one and I didn't want to love it but I really do. Its almost as though its got a personality. The road holding is sublime (it must have the sports suspension) but the 17in alloys tramline all the time and I'm worried if we get a puncture cos its a new tyre at £150 a pop.
Has anyone on here swapped the run flats on 17s for standard tyres? I'd be interested in your experiences.

Thanks guys

Sounds like you are having fun!

The ride... Not sure about how sports suspension worked on the R50s and R53s but my R56 s rides on 17" wheels, run flats and sports suspension and to be honest its rubbish. On perfect roads it comes into its own but on average to normal roads the ride is too harsh and crashy. So I am in the middle of deciding what wheels to go for. Obviously I've got to stick with the sports suspension - if I was specing now knowing what I know I wouldnt bother with it - so its going to be 16" wheels with proper tyres not the shitty runflats. The car is pepper white with black roof and strips so the wheels are going to be black, just can't decide on a design...

I'll post pics and impressions when its done...

Get shot of the runflats soon as... feels like a different car. Plenty of choices for tyres but don't skimp on them. Toyos are popular as are Goodyear F1s.

Oh and welcome (back)...

I know a chap who works at a non MINI main dealer and he says he can get 4 17in P Zero Neros fitted for £380. Thought that sounded ok but are these tyres any good?

Love the car though. Get that same feeling I had when I passed my test 10 years ago if I knew I was going for a drive I'd get giddy. The suspension is a bit bumpy sometimes but I don't think its unbearable. Reminds me of my first mini - a 1988 mini mayfair in beige (it was my first car and it was cheap as chips). Just need some bonnet stripes now.

I want to ditch my run flats as well. Problem is what do I do if I do get a flat tyre? What are the options for those circumstances? I find the combination of 17in plus sports supension and run flats just doesn't work. Based on previous cars I've owned it has to be down to the run flats and I'm hoping normal tyres will really cure the problem.

Just get a can of the tyre mousse stuff. If you get a flat just use that and it will get you to the nearest tyre shop unless the tyre is completely dead. My Elise and Clio 172 came with no spare just a can of tyre mousse. Thats what I'm going to do.

On the other subject I suspect that 17" wheels are just too big, think proper tyres will help but reckon 16's with proper tyres will be much better.

Depends which Toyos to be fair - IMHO obviously. The T1r's have been fine on mine dry, wet and on track in the wet. The t1s's were pretty poor in the wet though.

www.mini2.com/forum/wheels-tyres-suspension-brakes/51591-replacement-tire-statistics.html

Try flicking through the info there - plenty of data to go on for you.

Tyres are quite a personal thing, but anything is better than the runflats.

When I got my MCS it came with 16" wheels and with the runflats the ride was just too harsh.

I changed to 17" alloys (very beautiful ones!) about a month ago with non-runflats and the ride is so much improved. I believe that 17" alloys get some bad press which is entirely unwarranted. Just ditch the runflats and you'll see a whole world of difference. I'm soooo happy with my current setup and would have done it much sooner if funds had allowed. Can of tyre gunk in the boot and job's a good 'un.
