Hi I hope someone may be able to help with the procedure of a steering wheel change on my 2003 cooper. I want to change the 2 spoke wheel (standard) for the leather 3 spoke which comes with a new air bag. Does anyone know if the is any more to swapping the wheel with the battery disconnected and plug in the new air bag, someone has told me this has to be a dealer fit due to it having to be reset on the srs system ...Anyone know cheers Dave Widds I don't want the air bag to go bag on me it was £200

Disconnect the battery.

Behind the 2 spokes(dash side) there are 2 holes, inside 2 torx 30 screws.Slacken them all the way off(they wont come out but you will feel they are undone).

Pull airbag towards you.

Behind the airbag are 2 electical terminals attached-the connectors each have a black plastic bridge about 3mm x 10mm fitted too them. This needs to be gently prised up to unlock the connector.Dont damage this bridge!!the airbag light will come on otherwise.

put airbag on floor, bag facing up.

Undo horn conector from center slip ring(near centre of s/wheel)

Undo 16mm head bolt(tip, take ign key out so the steering lock is on)

Note the position of the aligning marks for the splines(where the bolt was)This will help aligning new wheel.

slide s/wheel off.

Fit the new wheel(make sure center bolt is tight).

The next part is the way I do it and that is to connect airbag electrical conectors and push the black bridges back down, then just rest in position but not fit.Reconnect battery.I then go for a short road test to make sure the s/wheel is aligned.
Once your sure wheel is aligned and secure disconnect battery again

the new air bag should just push on by applying equal force to either side.In other words push it home straight and thats it-its held on by springs instead of screws. Can be very difficult to get back off once on if your not happy with something.
