My wife has just taken delivery of a new Cooper. She traded in a 04 Cooper, mainly for an update but also because she considered the fuel economy to be on the disappointing side. Despite mainly out of town motoring she never managed more than 35-36 mpg. Anyone any idea of what she should expect from her new Cooper?

id say with new engine, BMW efficient drive, stop start etc up to 5-10mpg more in mixed driving.

I got 37mpg over 42k in my Cooper, borrowed a new one for the day and returning mid 40s.

Glad to see its not just me. Runs from Devon to Sussex and back never get higher than 36mpg. The official figures are a joke.

Our 07 Cooper S averaged a shade under 40mpg in the 10 months we owned it, and it was a pre stop/start model, which should add a little more on it. I would think you'll average mid 40's on a Cooper.

Mate has a new R56 with teh start/stop technology...gets 45mpg around town.

Though he is the slowest driver I have ever met so that is probably as good as is possible in the car in those conditions.

Early '07 R56 Cooper without Stop Start and 17" wheels doing short journeys aroun lanes gets 39.8mpg odd - Raises to around 45 odd on the very rare motorway blat. Not great figures if you ask me - Get the same out of an S!!

I only get 30mpg in my R56 S....a lot more on runs if I behave. Still, I think it is not bad for how fast it goes....and hence hard to not put foot down given chance.

I only did town dirving in mine around london and managed 34 mpg over 10k.

So with mixed use I would assume late thirties smile

We're getting 47 or so - bit of dual carriageway, bit of urban. Does about 300 miles a week

Ditto with the 'I'm glad it's not just me...' My Cooper D (17" rims) is returning no better than 51mpg after 6 months of fairly gentle ownership, which while being pretty good, is nowhere near the 72.4/64.2-depending where you look- that Mini claim on their website. How can they get away with this? No other car I've owned, from WRX to Golf GTi, to Alfa V6, has ever been so far from the advertised figure. readit
Still love it, though.

I think this is an affliction that affects every modern small car as CO2 output legislation and CO2 output-based taxation become more and more important. The ECE-standard fuel consumption test is performed under 'laboratory' conditions and the more development time spent on making sure the car performs at its best on this test, the more the manufacturer comes out smelling of roses - even if the changes made are likely to hurt real-world fuel consumption (not unlike the EuroNCAP crash test procedures then).

I doubt the makers of the WRX and Alfa V6 were as bothered about the test's outcome - they knew they were in for a bashing anyway.wink I struggle to get near the stated fuel consumption of my R50 Mini One, yet exceed the stated values of even a four litre Chimaera by some margin with my 4.3, even though it's not yet run in.

To get back to the original query - having road tested an early R56 Cooper at the end of 2006 under the same circumstances as my own One, I'd say there is significant 'air' between the two in terms of fuel consumption. For instance where my usual late night jaunt back from Calais usually results an a fuel consumption of 9l/100km, the Cooper consistently showed values around the 7.5l/100 km mark (motorway, cruising speed about 0.95 leptonswink ).

The 07 S I sprint with my father (He uses it as his every day car as well) Has in the last 10K done better than 40mpg including the racing. I think he drive a littel slower when my Mother is in the car.

3,000 km in so far on my new Cooper and it seems to be stuck at 6,4 l/100 km (according to the trip computer, but the amount of fuel that actually goes in suggests this is pretty accurate for a change).

On the fixed camera section of the M1 with cruise on at 50 in my r56 cooper s with stop start I averaged 48 mpg. Then after that and at 88 mph with cruise and by the end of my 180 journey it showed 43.8 mpg. Once warm around town I am seeing 34 mpg.
