Brake Light out on Mini Cooper

My girlfriend has just asked me to change the bulb on her Mini Cooper (2001), but the bulb is good. The light works ok when the lights are turned on, only the brightness no longer increases when she brakes.

Has anyone else seen this? I have checked fuses etc.

I am sure it's something simple, and am having one of those Sunday moments.....any help much appreciated.

Is it a dual filament bulb ? So it would still light up when side lights are on but not when the brake pedal is pushed.

..that would be my guess and a new bulb will be required.
