Cooper D Test Drive

Had our first ever test drive today in a Cooper D.
Have to say it was a really impressive car, the one we drove only had about 600 miles on it, so there was still some loosening up to be done in the engine department.
What really surprised us was that the ex demo's are very much like Porsche in that you are paying list. If this is the case I don't know how they sell them. A second surprise was that a factory order will be delivered in only 4/5 weeks. A factory order from Ford at the moment appears to be 8-12 weeks.

the cream line interior are tricky to sell on, also I would probably put a sunroof on there, its great and will make it an easy seller.
And all our demo's go roughly 1500-2000 off list..So don't know where you went ect.
And there will be plenty of cars like that already built and in storage so you coudl get a brand new one in a week I should think, I found a similar white one for a guy the other day.

I just picked up a Clubman D for a 24 hour test drive. Got in the car, adjusted the seat and thought 
I find these cars to be a perfect fit for me (and I'm 2m tall), driving position is superb. But then I turned on the ignition...
I hope the engine grows on me, maybe it wasn't such a good idea to try the Cooper S first
Looks like I'll end up testing the petrol (non Cooper S) version next week also. Would be interested to hear how folks feel petrol & diesel models compare. I'm used to a Honda so anything under 5000rpm is a shock to the system

I've driven a petrol Cooper S in the past, but the diesel is much better. I'd be tempted to get the pepper or chilli pack put on the car as well. Don't forget to get the TLC pack too.

I test drove both the petrol (non-S) and diesel cars in both Clubman and hatchback forms and take delivery of my petrol hatch next week. I wanted an economical, fun car for around London, mostly short trips, with the occasional longer journey out of town. I found the diesel engine quite "clattery" and, as with most single-turbo diesel engines IMO, the power delivery was too lumpy for my tastes.
Personal preference, of course, but I prefer the power delivery of the petrol and, for the bulk of the journeys I'll be doing, the fuel economy will be little worse than the diesel (given how long it takes a diesel to warm up to max efficiency compared to a petrol engine).
But it was a tough decision. Each to their own I guess. Try a few and see which ticks your boxes.

Quite liked the power delivery, seemed fairly linear for a turbo engine
Not a fast car as such, but not having to slow down for corners helps maintain momentum
Really liked the ride and handling, surprised since this was on standard 15" wheels with runflats. Firm but not too firm, not much body roll, absorbed bumps nicely.
Standard headlights are poor
Standard sound system is also poor
Fuel economy was very good even when pushing on (as far as can be told from computers, which I don't completely trust)
Wipers make a noticeable "swoooosh" wind noise when activated at speed
Driving position is the best I have tried. A perfect fit. Got back into the Civic and felt like I was sitting on top of the thing...
For me at least it was a great compromise between driving fun, economy and practicality. I realised this last night when (at 11:30pm) I decided to go for another drive despite the fact it was pissing with rain and strong winds were blowing leaves, branches & twigs all over.
Pity they're so expensive. Need to figure out if I can I really afford an extra €7k over other cars with similar spec for the "fun factor"? If I only drove on highways and in town I probably wouldn't bother, but I'm lucky enough to spend 80% of my driving time on curvy A roads, twisty B roads and gravel

Couple of things you mentioned can be improved upon...
- Lights, epc Xenon's and they go from bad to very good, well worth the ££
- Standard stereo is pants, but can be nicely upgraded by www.newminisctuff.co.uk that is route that I went down and difference was remarkable.

Yep, I found the xenons on the Cooper S very good when I tried it, and essential for me since I drive a lot on country roads. 15" wheels will do for winter and 16" for summer.
It's still quite a rare car here in Finland, only 5 in the country available for sale 2nd hand and 3 of those are ex demo cars. So no bargains to be had yet...
One other plus point, the more restrained interior of the Cooper D was much more to my liking than the over-chromed interior of the Cooper S

Cooper D's very popular due to the low CO2 (£35 instead of £120). Had a go in a ONE, Cooper, & Cooper D but went for the Cooper on 15" (non runflats - not aware of rf option on 15"). This is partly because my mileage is so low it would take a ridiculously long time to claw back the difference in ticket price. I'm getting a reported 45mpg from the petrol 1.6, but everywhere (even the trunk roads) around here is a 40mph limit so the cruise is set and I'm comatose. Still, gotta be like safer ain'it.
Economics & politics of speed aside, I found the diesel more of a cruiser, while the petrol was more fun when revved out so went for that.

You might want to stay with the standard issue Chili Pack 16"s. The bigger wheels just tend to make for a duller drive and a more agitated ride in town.
We bought a Cooper D for the driving school 18 months back, same spec as you want straight out the showroom. Made nthem change the 17" wheels for 16" (more learner/curb friendly!) and I think the car looks better on these. My Mrs gets 47mpg, but then learners aren't the most economical drivers!Nice 07 plate here
