That puts a lot of much younger people to shame.

Our VM70 record is 19:55 eek

23:37 is still impressive though, my best at 60 is 22:20, If I only lose a minute in the next 10 years I'll be happy (and very surprised!)

He did 2:32 in London back in the day but injury stopped his running. He's after the VM70 record at the local Parkrun.

Going for my my 1st Parkrun on Saturday.

A bit of background, I'm 30, 6ft and 14 stone. Fitness wise, have tried to eat OK most of my life but haven't done any proper exercise in about 5 years.

I've been running 3 times a week for the past 3 weeks but haven't yet been able to reach the 3 miles/5K mark. I'm hoping running in a group will help keep me going and get me to the finish line.

If there's any Ormeau parkrunners on here, keep an eye out for a guy in an orange Nike shirt who'll probably be collapsed in a heap, hopefully just after the finish line.

good, you'll get round, some people at mine walk it.
I'm impressed by anyone of a weight who goes parkrunning, that is proper energy output to get round.
There should be a gradient for weight not just age. biggrin

Enjoy the run and there will be people running at your pace no matter how fast or slow you are. Start at the back and let the whippets tear off and focus on enjoying it and keeping going. It's perfectly ok to throw your arms in the air if you make it without stopping as it's a social group who will love the fact you achieved something.

Enjoy!

When you cross the finish line keep an eye out for any clubs or groups that are still hanging about. They're usually the most inclusive of running clubs*!

  • Not a slight on more athletic clubs. Different goals for different people.

Ventured to Greenock parkrun back on Saturday. Perfect sunny and calm day, coupled with a flat out and back course along the promenade, meant I managed my second fastest ever parkrun time. Sneaked under the 20 min barrier with a 19:58. Well chuffed as my all time PB is a 19:52 that I managed 4 years ago. Happy days.

As long as you start slow you'll be fine, you'll probably be overtaking people towards the end which feels much better than going off fast and struggling the last k.

Last weeks slowest person at Ormeau took 50 mins - from what you say you'll easily be quicker than that.

Enjoy - its a good way to stretch yourself. As above, start easy and pick it up if you can, but most importantly, have a bit of fun. It's not a race, but a really good challenge with others around you.

Cheers for all the encouragement!

I made it! I began to struggle about 2/3rds of the way through but got talking to someone which helped get me over the line.

I enjoyed the bit of cake at the end, a very welcome surprise.

I’ll edit this post when my time gets published.
Edit: 37:10, 427th out of 488.

Anyone had any issues with the new parkrun wristbands failing to scan etc? I have the original design, in perfect condition but today was the 3rd or 4th time I’ve been an ‘Unknown’ rolleyes Considering getting the new one to see if it’s any better. Luckily again the event RD has kindly said they’ll manually update my time when they get the chance.

Managed to get down to my first park run in 4 years this morning at leybourne lakes near Maidstone. Have done under 20 mins in training runs according to Strava so was aiming for 19:30 pace. Unfortunately only managed the first mile before my right hamstring went :-( gutted as was really enjoying it until then.

Nice one

My first parkrun was 39 minutes and 18 months later my pb is 26 mins. Lost a couple of stone too

Make it your default Saturday 9am thing :-)

Did my 17th parkrun beginning with the letter B. Was supposed to be having a gentle run with a 10k race yesterday but got carried away with the nice course. smile

Did some more touristing of my own, visiting Merthyr parkrun as my 27th different event. Not the most inspired of courses with 5x switchbacks, but it was very compact so only needed minimal marshals. They had full use of the leisure centre next door for parking, toilets, cafe etc, so quite a convenient setup.

Small field of just 61, so my chances of finishing near the top were quite high. Crossed the line in 3rd place and was given the 3rd place token, but somehow I'd been promoted up to 2nd place...

The local Sainsbury's were the sponsor that helped get it off the ground, so they provided free bottles of water and cakes at the end!

I'm 17 stone 7 ounces and I regularly do Ludlow parkrun, usually regarded as one of the toughest courses, due to muddy forest conditions and long climbs. My best time is 25.34 over that course although I rarely drop below 26 minutes now. My bro reckons you can add at least a minute over flatter, tarmac based courses but I prefer this sort of running. I've been a runner since 2001, although I'm much quicker over 10k type distances, it is a lot of fun trying to improve on your performance.

The main issue with Ludlow, is the cold which really freezes your muscles and your lungs, so I usually have to do a four mile or so run to warm myself up beforehand. I find it handy to identify someone who is a little bit quicker than me and try and keep up with them as I don't have a fitness watch or Strava.

I did Ludlow on new years eve a couple of years ago. I reckon it is 2 minutes slower than a normal parkrun. It's a great event on trails and good hills.

Very friendly bunch of people and I think the course record is 17:xx.
