I get whizzed by all the time, people are quicker it's no big deal, but whistles sounds like the idea of a tt to me. If you wanna fly past, then do so. Parkrun is for all; whistles feels like an alienator , in my opinion. On Warry, the one I do most, there is a bit where the fast ones loop back against the slow/middle ones, people usually shout keep left, which is sensible and common/usual running etiquette?
I agree it could easily put off the slower runners if they are made to feel like they are in the way. In my mind Parkrun is about encouraging people into the sport, if faster runners want to run fast 5k times unimpeded then get on the track (I say that as a half decent middle distance runner in past times). When I've done parkruns in the past i'm normally near the front and have no issues shouting a polite "keep left" or "excuse me".
Sounds sensible.
When you volunteer a lot, it's easy to spot how/why parkrun works. All the different people who run. I like to volunteer for the furthest point, so I still get the steps in. People of all shapes and sizes, some coming in quite late but still obviously giving it their all, you get to recognise quite a lot of people. Quite a lot of older people who it's a nice social thing to help keep them to their fitness routine. It's such a shame that that something like a whistle would be introduced into that environment.

Totally agree with this. I run a very busy 2 lap parkrun that has a section down a pavement and marshalls asking people to keep left seems to work really well. In fact I think a whistle would be worse as people would be more likely to change their line to get out of the way whereas the best thing for the faster guys is for the people they're passing to keep a constant line, regardless of side. The only time I've nearly had an incident with someone was when a kid suddenly cut across the width of the path in front of me which forced me off the path while I was at full pelt.
On the subject of buggies-I had someone 10s behind me with a buggy at the weekend. I ran 18:30 so was very surprised to see them there but fair play to the guy!
Hoping to do Portrush parkrun this week work permitting, it’s on the beach which will make it interesting.

Yeah, that's quite fast for a buggy! Imagine running those times without a balanced arm swing, and perhaps not being upright etc? Hugely impressive!Yes. It’s for Firefox and chrome: https://running-challenges.co.uk

At my event the marshals say ‘keep left/right’ depending on the course we are using in the narrow sections and no one has complained yet. Seems sensible to me. We also warn people in the briefing that if their time is under 25 mins then they will get lapped (it’s a 3 lap course) so faster runners are to be courteous when passing.

This is what I've experienced. To my mind, the onus is always on the runner behind, whether lapping or passing, to look after the runner in front. It's basic etiquette. It's not a race, so you shouldn't need sharp elbows. That whistle thing is total bks.We also warn people in the briefing that if their time is under 25 mins then they will get lapped (it’s a 3 lap course) so faster runners are to be courteous when passing.
like those badges...to think I was looking forward to my black and purple normal ones....
