Saw 'PARKUN' painted on the tarmac of the south coast seafront promenade where I live & like to take a 'brisk' early morning stroll.
I now understand why I have to share space with a mass of earnest looking huffing & puffing types breathing out their potential Covid-19 fumes as they take themselves so seriously rushing past me ignoring all social distancing advice - "me me me get out of my way I'm a runner".
The cyclists are as bad & sadly the soppy council decided to remove the painted lines that separated the Lyrca lot from the runners & others.
Thankfully when the tide is out one can avoid the runners & cyclists.
Thank you for this very interesting and insightful post.
Sadly people like him are all too common. They think they own the pavements and flatly refuse to give way to anyone different to them. When I’m walking, no problem, but when I’m running, they act like selfish idiots.

Thankfully I do most of my running on empty country lanes, but when I do run in towns, I see a lot of people like him - they normally stare defiantly forwards as they strut down the middle of the pavement, eager to assert themselves over a domain they see as exclusively theirs.

ps: I am aware I’ve blindly assumed this poster is a man - they always are!
Sorry but my point somewhat proven within the last hour.
There I was briskly walking, with a few sessions of speed walking thrown in as I adhered to one the side of a wide promenade. Suddenly from behind me I hear much heavy panting interspersed with low groans. Turning around I spy a female dripping in perspiration bearing down on me at some pace. Given that she could only overtake me on one side & that the promenade ahead was deserted I foolishly assumed I would be given a wide berth. How silly of me, because she comes flying past 'almost' brushing my shoulder & no doubt showering me with her sweat & germs. So please do NOT tell me that some, not all, such runners are arrogant & pre-occupied with only themselves.
Yes I'm male, not old, a cyclist & a swimmer so do respect the need to keep fit & avoid the current fad of being proud to be fat.
It's people in general; it's unfair to blame runners and/or cyclists. Every time I leave the house I come across people who aren't socially distancing, whether they be builders, cyclists passing me, postmen, other pedestrians etc. Some people get it and care, some people don't. It's people that are the problem, not the sport they happen to be doing when you see them.
Rob's right, things like this bring out the best and the worst in people. I've personally been super conscious when using pavements, often running in cycle lanes so that I give people plenty of space. Yet I've lost count of the amount of times a car has beeped at me because I'm somehow causing an obstruction. Regardless, I'm not on some personal crusade against all car drivers because of the actions of a few morons.

I think some people just have a problem with fit people and direct their jealously and insecurity into hatred. Both my wife and I have been shouted at this weekend when out running, in separate incidents. I was running at an easy pace along the side of the road yesterday morning, and she had stopped to allow a car past on Saturday morning. Today I had a car deliberately drive at me to try and scare me. This sort of thing happens to me about once every couple of weeks (13-14 hours of running).

Bloke is clearly a halfwit but self styled as 'a sensible voice in a sea of hysteria'. Dunning-Kruger at its finest.

Thanks for posting the Twitter link to the London Marathon announcement - I was unaware that UK Athletics had recently released guidelines on running events. Summary at the link below, with links to pages with more information.

Yep. I always try and give people plenty of room and thank them if and when they make room for me. 90-95%% of people are great, but then there are the ones who walk in a line right across the pavement and refuse to make any attempt to give you room, then mutter something when you squeeze past before (probably) rushing home to take to social media and complain about 'inconsiderate runners'

The guidelines sound like an absolute nightmare. It's no wonder many events are being cancelled.

I remember standing in a crowded startling pen for about an hour when I ran London, and it still took ages to get underway and a good few km before there was space to run freely. No idea how they could do it and maintain social distancing - would take most of the day just to get the race started

yes The vast majority of pedestrians, car drivers and runners that I see share a smile and a wave with me. It's thankfully a tiny minority who have an attitude problem. When I ran in town I found the same as you: groups of walkers in a line blocking the entire pavement, staring right at you, and refusing to move, even if I say "excuse me". I've occasionally had to stop running and turn sideways to get through! I then get sworn at for being a "bloody runner"... rolleyes Now I run in the country it's car drivers I have to contend with, again most of whom are very pleasant, but some of whom seem to think it's illegal to run on the road.

Some runner are aholes.
Some cyclists are aholes,
Some motorcyclists are aholes,
Some car drivers are aholes,
Some truck drivers are aholes,

Basically some people are aholes, whether they run/cycle/ride/drive/etc is largely irrelevant.

Also unless you live in New Zealand this hasn't got anything to with parkrun as it hasn't been operating since March.

9 out of 10 people are considerate. I’ve run every day this year, I walk past pedestrians if it’s a bit tight. Invariably a friendly greeting.

1 in 10 is an idiot as above..

Announcement coming on Friday about the framework that will allow parkrun to restart. I'm not sure that mean it will start soon though!

I'm looking forward to it coming back. I seem to have increased my pace alot over lockdown so I expect to be smashing my PBs! It was around 22 mins back in February. I'm hoping to get close to 20 mins or just under, will depend on how I feel on the day I guess.

I'm expecting that Parkrun will be made into a time trial type system where you have to prebook a slot. Thoughts on this?

I hope it isn’t on a TT basis. I get my best times when chasing down people or trying to outrun them!

That said, as an interim, I will take part and it will be good to see it back.

Not an time soon IMO. Paid events like races maybe, because you can control the numbers, but I can't see free events like parkrun being possible until restrictions on the size of gatherings are completely lifted as you can't guarantee how many people will show up.

But at the same time the track and trace system would be easy!

I can see this working for races. For example, in a half marathon if you only had, for example, 50 people in each 5 minute window (e.g. 1:25-1:30, 1:30-1:35 etc), it would give a nice socially distanced spread to the field.

Parkrun though isn't a race - it's primarily a social community event with a strong ethos in favour of a no pressure friendly atmosphere, where 10 minute milers are as welcome as 6 minute milers. I therefore can't see this sort of formalised system being attractive to Parkrun's organisers. Parkrun is also supported by some big organisations now, and they will probably have a zero risk stance, not wanting to be associated with any further Covid cases or even deaths.

What about the people who run with no barcode?

It would be easy if everyone who runs had registered and brought their barcode AND they had all updated their email addresses! Lots of people put an email when they register, then never update it.
