There's a right bunch of lunatics on some of the parkrun facebook groups.
Talking of lunatics! 2 inaugurals this weekend, 1 near Edinburgh, 1 west of London, 600 and 400 runners. There are so many people who are so self entitled that they think they should go to inaugurals. I feel sorry for the event teams who had to handle them, I was stressed enough at the inaugurals I was RD for and they only had 100 and 200, 600 is well into overloaded funnel territory if you aren't geared up for it.

I think January for an inaugural is potentially a bad move. Parkruns are normally busier this time of year as it is with everyone trying to be healthier with New Year’s resolutions etc. It probably didn’t help that the park management had promoted the new Auldcathie parkrun on their Facebook page prior to starting too. Plus the parkrun friends Scotland group is quite prolific in advertising upcoming new events. There are so many people who are so self entitled that they think they should go to inaugurals. I'm not into running at all, but seeing this thread reminded me of a girl I dated briefly who told me she did Parkruns.
What she actually meant was, she was obsessed with going to a different one every weekend, not just around the UK but overseas as well, and would fly off somewhere basically just to do a Parkrun and then fly back home.
She had a big Victorian house and rented out three rooms to lodgers to fund her travel.
All seemed a bit heavy for me.
To be fair, she did volunteer as a marshall for the kids' version as well.

We were quite lucky that there were still Covid related travel restrictions for our inaugural so didn't get any tourists and had a nice manageable field of 50. I just registered with Parkrun and was considering rocking up to a 'race' at the weekend, but reading the last few pages, I don't think I'll bother if this is the type of people I can expect to rub shoulders with
Why is Joe Public so damn crazy?!
Don't let it put you off, they're a very small minority, it's just we get a lot of them at our event due to the "challenges" that seem to be getting increasingly popular. The majority of parkrunners are a great bunch and it's what got me in to running and keeps me running (when not broken, done my back in again so no running for a few weeks)Why is Joe Public so damn crazy?!

Don't be put off - 97% of people wander down to their local parkrun, have a run/walk/jog/chat/coffee etc, wander off home and don't think about it much until they wake up the next Saturday but 3% get obsessive about things that aren't really that important. You may well never meet any of the 3%, we only see/hear about them because we're involved in volunteering / organising the events. Why is Joe Public so damn crazy?!
These figures may not be accurate seeing that I just made them up

You should definitely get onto the parkrun FB page and tell them of your plans to attend a 'race' Why is Joe Public so damn crazy?!
The actual experience of attending parkrun (absolutely superb, pretty much without fail) is completely different to the online lunatic narrative, which I'd agree is just a tiny but vocal minority of Karens.
My first and probably last podium on Saturday. The organisers had put a post on FB indicating it would likely be cancelled due to flooding but then Saturday morning confirmed it was on. Most of the top runners went to other events or had a rest. 3rd place with 19:56 which would usually be top 20.
I was disappointed not to receive a medal.

Nice, I've never made it higher than 4th, and even then I was over 3 minutes behind the guy in 3rd. Small fields are great I was disappointed not to receive a medal.

Looks like a new set of trustees has been appointed. Some heavy hitters on board, including one David Dinsmore, ex editor of The Sun.
Fair to say that this particular appointment has not been universally well received.

I do feel sorry for inaugural events, especially when they ask for people to stay away and wait for week 2 for example and it falls on deaf ears as people travel from far and wide to attend. Even if they’ve had a practice event (do all new events do this automatically?) I don’t imagine it fully prepares them for several hundred people turning up to event #1.
