The Rowing Thread!
Discussion
I remember having to ask for a 1/2 day off school, as we were asked to pace Oxford over the course before the boat race.
Only time I had a parents letter for absence.
Maths teacher was 5 and English teacher was 2 in the boat.
Really strange situation , ordering them around at the boat club, but didn’t even look at or acknowledge each other at school.

I know this is a very quiet thread but as it hasn't been mentioned I thought the dreadful news about Pete Reed was worth sharing:

And in particular if you are minded to do something to help, this tweet from Andy Triggs-Hodge will tell you how:

Henley Royal cancelled; Tokyo Olympics delayed until 2021.
(Although not all cancelled yet - certainly one of mine still needs to organise a committee meeting to confirm it - I think we can safely assume that all rowing events up to at least July will be lost)
I'd just got my Stewards' application accepted (Although not all cancelled yet - certainly one of mine still needs to organise a committee meeting to confirm it - I think we can safely assume that all rowing events up to at least July will be lost)

Due to safety concerns the River Thames has been closed to all navigation under Hammersmith Bridge. The bridge itself is also fully closed to all traffic including pedestrians (it’s been pedestrian only for a year or so).
Obviously we had a bit a COVID issue anyway, but if this situation continues we’ll have quite a challenge for the big Tideway races - Pairs Head only two months away.

My old school pontoon is right next to HB. Guess they're going upstream constantly from now on. What an utter shambles.

Yes above the bridge we’re going upriver only; below the bridge they can only come up as far as Harrods.

Certainly, it never felt far to the bridge!

Latymer it is - and it's virtually as close to the bridge as St Paul's.

You are right they are virtually opposite, but being on the outside of the bend and with all the “stuff” on that side between LTU and the bridge - Dove Pier and three other boating pontoons - means to me it feels a lot further than St Paul’s does, on the short side with nothing between them and the bridge.Certainly, it never felt far to the bridge!
Anyway we digress ...

If you haven’t seen it yet I highly recommend the film A Most Beautiful Thing - about the first all black American high school rowing program, from a seriously tough area of West Chicago. No great insights into rowing and certainly no magical turn around but the experiences of these guys and how rowing gave them something beyond violence and gangs is quite eye opening.
There are various online screenings available including one from BR this weekend.
