When he first arrived on the circuit i said to Mrs Fox 'there is a potential World Champ'
Over the years it seemed like he would take over Jimmy Whites mantle.

But what a great tournament from Day 1 an the two semis and the final. I have a lot of work to catch up on and some of those shots of the Championship, the snooker behind the pink and Gary Wilsons winning shot

Great entertainment all round

Nice that you put a proper reason for disliking a person 3rd in the list after some other hogwash your warped mental state has come up with. Very well done, your tongue is as sharp as Zorro's blade.

Getting back to adult talk, an excellent match from Trump, glad he finally got it.

I wonder if he would have cracked if playing Ronnie in the final with the crowd etc etc ? He got it easy playing roly poly Celtic fan Higgins of course.....

Trump was superb in pretty much every session of that final. I'm not sure if Ronnie, or anyone else for that matter, could have beaten him in that sort of form. 1st class.

Fair play to him. That was a relentless, focused effort and he executed that so well with killer instinct. The only way Trump stood a chance against Higgins in the final was to barrage him in the first half and build a big enough lead, which he did

I used to play in junior tournaments at the same club as Judd growing up and he was head-and-shoulders above the rest of us young ones (to be fair, he started playing on a full-size table at 7 years old and had coaching/mentoring from the owner until he was 17-18). But he clearly was a very quick learner and had talent for the game.

When I was 12yo and he was 10yo, our club junior team played a Portsmouth club (iirc) and he beat their top junior players who were 14-15 at the time. By the time all our matches finished, it was knocking on for 10pm and me and Judd decided to play a few frames. Despite playing all day and evening he still had endless enthusiasm and energy for the game, and proceeded to knock in a 94 break against me, at that time of night, at 10 years old…

His hard work and his family’s dedication and support cannot be underestimated. Most weeks they were taking him to tournaments and that snooker club was his second home throughout his childhood and teens. They deserve every ounce of success. Lovely stuff smile

Phenomenal performance. I always felt a bit ambivalent towards Trump because, although the reckless exhibition shots are always entertaining, there seemed to be little desire in him to graft, as well as things like the truly ill advised "head starts" tweet. What I saw yesterday is a different beast altogether, and one that I hope fulfils his potential.

The prospect of head to heads with ROS is intriguing indeed.

Despite this, I feel that there is still a lack of talent waiting to burst on to the scene. Mark Allen seems a bizarre character, Selby apparently can only play well sporadically, likewise Higgins. Robertson veers from sublime to very ordinary and the same can be said for Shaun Murphy.

We shall see.

A similar story here, watching Mark Allen progress. I'm a fair bit older at 42, but we were at the snooker club most nights, and despite having to pay for your light by the hour, sometimes we used to stop and just watch this young lad, barely able to reach into the middle of the table, knocking in massive breaks. Despite being vertically challenged at a young age, he barely used the rest, such was his incredible positional skills, even at that age. People used to keep track of how many centuries he would make - but after a while they stopped counting. No such problem counting my own centuries though, never got one, despite playing probably just as much snooker as young Mark biggrin

you are correct, the young guys [bar Trump] don't seem to have broken through. Williams, ROS & Higgins came through almost at the same time (~20 years ago) and are still pretty much at the top. If you take those 3, Trump, Robo and Selby and you have your big 6.

Ding has not quite done it and not sure he will.

Trump h2h vs ROS would be one-sided now I feel. I don't think ROS exceeds him in any level (safety, potting, break building or mentality)
the ROS of 10 years ago would have been a good match though

Yup I agree, Ronnie when in the zone is unbeatable

In terms of new talent coming through, we have Yan Bingtao, Zhou Yeulong, Zhao Xintong, Jackson Page, Jack Lisowski (been on the tour a while but talented, similar style to Judd), Lyu Haotian (another young prodigy). Those young Chinese players look ridiculously good for their ages

The Chinese players play very well, but seem to struggle mentally.

Qualifying over and the main draw now completed (see: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/snooker/53580677).

Some notable scalps in qualifying, not least of all Joe Perry (seeded 17) losing to Jamie Clarke (80). Also 18th seed Alli Carter losing to Louis Heathcote (79). The highest ranked qualifyier to make it through was Un-Nooh (20) as 19th seed Gary Wilson was knocked out by Ursenbacher (78)

Here's hoping Matthew Stevens wins his opening match against, well, a less popular player around these parts.....
