Wow, that’s going back a bit. Didn’t Robideux refuse to shake Ronnie’s hand and accuse him of unsportsmanlike conduct for playing left handed? Alain got a proper sulk on from memory lol..

Say what you want about him off the table, and many do, but I doubt we’ll see anyone as talented as Ronnie in the game again, certainly not in my lifetime anyway.

I hope he gets his 8th and retires a happy and contented man knowing he’s set some tough records for those who follow.
Alain Robideux was actually 8th in the world at the time, with Ronnie being 2nd. Just shows the difference in standards.

At the time many of the commentators were saying Ronnie would easily be top 16 just playing left handed. He is/was in a different league to many of his contemporaries.

Is judd trump a bit like Alex Higgins - technically unconventional but able to pull off 1 in a million shots? Not that he isn’t a great player, but he does seem a bit hot and cold.

I still remember that Higgins blue in the 69 break (screw and right hand side), I think the top 16 players could try 100 times each and not pull it off

I think if you look at Higgins arm he is actually quite conventional, ie his arm/cue follow a straight path (with fundamentally helps), although his body moves a lot, whereas Trump lines up off target and then corrects it a fraction of a second before impact. The latter is obviously unconventional and in my opinion will stifle his longevity in the game as ages catches up.

As for the blue, I think you are doing decent players a dis service as think many will nail the pot, the difficultly being generating enough cue power to provoke the reaction from the white. I still think many would make it 1 in 10.

Snooker is fundamentally a very simple sport. You take a stance and nearly every shot is the same, with alterations for speed of cue and slight changes to where you hit the white. That’s about it. The difficulties lie in how the ball reacts to being hit at different speeds, different speeds spins, and even whether it is being hit with or against the nap (as the latter has significant impact of ball deviation over any given distance). I now play golf, and it’s similar in that the set up is the same for nearly every shot, however only few players can generate enough club speed to hit a ball 300 yards regardless how good their contact is. Both sports result in the club/cue reaching zero speed at the end of their backswing so it’s just how quickly you can accelerate it from this position to contact without changing your action.

It’s such a great sport because of how simple is in essence is, although much harder in reality. I always though, and said to people, if they could knock in a 30 break (quite regularly) then there is no reason they couldn’t knock in a ton, by which I meant if you can put a break of say 8 balls together then it’s generally some talent not just luck, so the rest is massively mental.

His upbringing must have been difficult, both parents did jail time. He’s been very open about his demons and struggle.
Probably the most naturally gifted player that will ever play the game though.
I’d say undoubtedly the GOAT!
That was a decent final….& Ronnie was clearly very emotional at the end: I thought they were married after the lengthy clinch at the end hehe

I think he could do another…but the World Championship really is like no other tournament, it is an epic marathon.

Undoubtedly the most talented player of all time - been almost universally acknowledged for some time - but now that he's matched or beaten all of Henry's records (I think? At least all the significant ones anyway), for my money that's the final piece of the jigsaw for him being the GOAT.

I can see him being around for a good while longer though I think the talk of him getting to 10 or more WCs is getting a little bit carried away due to the unique nature of the tournament as mikeiow alludes to. Widening it to Triple Crown events, I could definitely see him picking up loads more.

Also while I'm here having caught up with the thread, thanks to Hobo for sharing your experience and insights - really interesting and I don't think anyone would have minded if the discussion had continued!

It was a shame he didn’t make 16 centuries in this championship (he equalled Henry’s 15).

Stephen was constantly asked about the comparison between him & Ronnie, liked 1 reply: "youngest World champion - he can't take that away from me!"

Funny the things that stick in your mind. Back in the summer of 1990 I was working in a dead end job in Stirling & Players snooker club was down the road. One day leaving work I spotted a young Mr Hendry driving past in his new Mercedes SL, top down (the car..) IIRC the reg was H814VRM. Don't ask my how I can recall that but not what I had for dinner last week..

Watching the seniors. Interesting in as far as it’s obvious that cue power and cue ball manipulation are clearly the hardest things to get back once they’re gone. It also highlights how much technically better the modern generation are.

I thought Lee Walker done really well making great comebacks in both the semi and final.

The pockets are cut completely differently from last week all the same.

Was an entertaining watch all week and congrats to the far travelled competitors.

Leo Scullion was actually refereeing at a Pro-Am in my local club last weekend. I was the official photographer.

Some big names and a great weekend :-

I'm watching the matches from the recent championship, even though I know who won. John Higgins is trying far too hard to lose. You'd think with his track record he'd be a bit more subtle about it.

Great one liners and a humorous guy.

In his first frame of this tournament, not long out his kip probably - he was on a 147.

All colours on the spot - potted 15 reds/blacks. Stretched a little on the yellow and missed with a serious jaw rattle.

Looked like a formality.

Next day, first thing again - he bangs in a 138 break, then a 102 in another frame.

Superb player and a pleasure to watch him so close up.

Cheers,
Dougie.

Mark Selby getting back to his best with a maximum at the British Open yesterday. Watch out for the audacious treble to keep the break going.

Great match, and Mark looks great after losing 4st. Good to watch him now without his belly hanging over the table on every shot.

Just watching the Champion of Champions competition now. Fan Zhengyi looks to have potential.

For some reason, when I watch snooker I've got into the habit of looking at the surnames and thinking of the best alternative first names. At the moment I've got Sergeant Wilson verus Doris Day.

I'll get me coat. paperbag
