Still three days to go. If we bat all through tomorrow we'll still have no more than a 300 run lead, and probably only 250, so the draw is very much favourite unless the pitch starts to take a lot of spin.

if we have a 200 lead by stumps tonight then someone will have a double ton.

Only caught the end of the analysis on Sky yesterday but I think they were saying whenever Strauss has had an unbeaten ton at stumps, he's never got more than 6 the following morning!!

Bonkers!

I've been pootling round the Peak District in the Atom all day, so only seen the current scorecard.

Looks like Anderson has been doing his part, however I'll guess that not all our batsmen have displayed as much application as they should have,

Tis a funny old game, an hour ago I suspect most England fans were either a little disgruntled or drunk, or possibly even both.

Yet with that third wicket falling. we're now dreaming of a couple more wickets tonight and winning the game with a day to spare.

Who knows what'll which way it'll swing.

completely baffling, all the chat has been saying the pitch is a road, and yet 14 wickets went down.

WI top order look poor although obviously I. jimmy and broad we have the best opening pair in cricket right now.

I was expecting a full day of Pietersen and Strauss breaking records... but there you go.

I think everybody shared that opinion , The game can be so unpredictable at times & just goes to show what a fantastic game Cricket is

Keep pinching myself that we are still no1 in the world after endless hours of watching our boys get stuffed every series ,

bring on the Saffers

Given that in the Lords test England went into Stumps with a commanding position then contrived to give the rest of their runs away the next morning for not much, then Id say there was precedent for this morning.

As to Jimmy and Broad knocking over their top 3 cheaply, well Id say that was a damn near certainty...its 4 out of 4 now!

Tim nice-but-dim then did the rest of the damage against a middle order that was mentally gone. It was also excellent high class bowling. The ball going both ways and on a true Test match line and length. The Windies batsmen were neither good enough nor in any position to withstand that.

Bairstow and the short ball look a dodgy combination though. Gooch needs to sort that with him and quick!

Anyone listening to TMS on Saturday when Roach got Cook twice with no-balls ? I'm sure they went on to say that in over 2000 overs bowled in Test matches Michael Holding only bowled two no-balls ! biggrin

Hardly seems worth the effort - I would reckon on about 45 minutes play and 10 minutes of that will be the innings change wink

Why are people always talking about leaving Bresnan out?

I'm not one of these die-hards that knows everything there is, but someone who was been part of a team that has won every time he has played is a pretty good start in my book.

I had a quick check on cric info and he has the following stats:

Batting - 35.88 average
Bowling - 44 wickets @ 26.88

Pretty handy to have in the team if you ask me

Sure - good stats and a handy player no question

We are very lucky with the depth of the bowlers.

Finn has played 13 tests, has 53 wickets at 26 a pop.... He has a pretty good case too.

I would quite like England to get a bit more aggressive and include the extra bowler, as I think the current bowlers can bat a bit, so drop Bairstow/Bopara/Morgan (that position hasn't really contributed much for a while now) and have other bowling options

Why? Our bowlers win our games and have done for the last 3 seasons. In fact I struggle to think of a test match where our bowlers have failed in the last cpl of seasons.

Our batsmen however, have failed several times and indeed lost us 4 test matches straight over the winter.
And you want us to lose a batsman????

Our bowling is working at 9/10 mostly.
Out batting is working at 6.5/10 mostly.

And you think there is more margin in strengthening the bowling than there is in strengthening the batting? England have a superb balance to the side right now and that last batting slot gives them the option of a little flex if they need it. Play 2 spinners...put Prior to 6, Bres to 7 and bring Monty in. It only really works though if Bres and preferably Broad are both fit.

Its the balance of what is need and who is fit that counts. Dont forget also that England have this pool of 8 test players because 2 of them are usually not available at any one time.
