First pass I thought so but I wasn’t listening attentively. The interviewer was very good. He changed tack when given lame responses. She played like st and if she can’t handle the press like the match, she’s finished.
£294K from Wimbledon QF, €590K from Paris SF, $325K from Rome F.

Finished?

It's not the first time she's been prickly / off with the press.
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/12164291/Jonathan...

I don't have any sympathy for her, she should know better than to answer questions in that manner. It all comes with the territory, media coverage makes those events, without them the prize money isn't there. Don't bite the hand and all that...

She was/is ste on court in comparison to her peers. Steadily the same. Consistent at being ste in comparison. Great tennis player but by comparison, ste. If she could find a way to lose all her debilitating quirks & yips she might get there eventually. In truth I think she'll be back playing as an Australian in a few years. She's about as british as a bowl of goulash with a fosters tinnie as a chaser...

Felt for her TBH. He was ridiculously patronising, even I stated that seconds before she accused him of the same. It wasn’t the question that was the issue, it was his tone and delivery.

Pressure got to her and she developed the dreaded ‘stiff arm’, it can happen and when it does nothing you do can get it back. That’s why the mental side is so massively important.

The other issue she has is the yips whilst walking about, she seems to stub her toe every third step, utterly bizarre.

Any sports "star" who can't accept questions after a defeat isn't going to get very far. It's hardly an unknown. It's a bit of a disingenuous comparison to Beryl having a bad day down at the laundrette being doorstepped by the press about how she can't work the machines properly time and time again.

These athletes have been competing since childhood and will have had uncomfortable questions asked since the same.

Getting all #MeToo and accusing the interviewer of being patronising smacks of desperation in trying to deflect from her own deficiencies.

TL;DR
She's st and she knows she is.

The nastiness toward her in this thread only makes me sympathise with her more.

There's something quintessentially British and PH about displaying exceptional unpleasantness from the comfort of an armchair or similar recumbent position toward any persons performance that might have fallen below an entirely unreasonable expectation.

The irony of the common inclusion of a question regarding nationality is usually lost on those with such expectations.

Being British and half decent in a sport we are notoriously poor at is a licence to print (sponsorship) money and raise your profile.

See Rusedski for further details.

It's not nastiness, it the reality of top level sport.

She's the "British" No.1 and utterly fell apart on centre court on national television at Wimbledon to far inferior opposition.

Are the British sporting press not going to scrutinize that?

She handled it appallingly.

She had a bad day on court and made it worse off court.

But then seeing as the headlines are as much about the row as her performance, her deflection may have worked.

I spent my whole career ‘examining my own professional prowess’, having it questioned by others and questioning others. It paid off as it always does.

Recognising weaknesses and acknowledging errors when they’re made is essential in improving any skill or ability.

If you don’t, you don’t improve. Maybe Conta’s a case in point.

PH isn't in any way connected to "top level sport".

She's ranked 18 in the world. Much of this ranking reflects a remarkably good run on slower surfaces rather than fast. She reached the QF's of Wimbledon - not something any other British player might have hoped for.

I suspect she's far more critical of herself than anyone here.

A bad day in the office on a surface she isn't playing well on.

Well done, learn from it, move on.

That was my immediate thought when I saw it, I must say.

That's how it would've played out if she hadn't reacted as she did.

in some ways its unfortunate that the way sports stars respond to the media takes more time and effort than it should.

i personally dislike the interview straight after the match even worse interviews DURING the match, phil neville at the WWC, BBC and rugby league as the players come off at half time FFS what are they expecting??? Proust? no what you get is the usual platitudes and "they are tough opposition" "we'll have to be on our game" blah blah blah.

I would prefer the players to have a bit of time to reflect and come down from the dissapointment or euphoria of the occasion and I think that would allow for better interviews.

She played well for a quarter of the match and it fell apart from there. so question. I think the issue I had with the interview yesterday was her reaction to how she played. Did she genuinely believe she had played her best tennis when it was so abundantly clear she hadn't.

there is a right to challenge her on stuff like that absolutely - why should she be treated differently ?

I actually thought the crowd never got behind her yesterday and although not an excuse it might have affected her mentally.

It was delivered to her as a passive-aggressive scolding, dreadful.
She knew she collapsed, the last thing she needed to ruin her confidence even further is a patronising walking ego reiterating it in that manner.

Is it me or has Williams duped all into actually thinking she's such a 'sweetie' ?.

Not here, she hasn't. Isn't she good buds with her Royal Meganness of No Photography? Much says, it does.

She's putting far too much drama into this mixed doubles match. You don't win just by shouting your head off at every swish of the racket. Badly needs to calm down. Very amateurish play. They're getting destroyed here by a genuine MD team as opposed to two individual stars who don't know where to stand in doubles.

Agreed. The screamy shouty thing and the little spin at the end, desperate to be adopted by public.
