Nobody in their heads picked that one. Remarkable nearing the end of his 38th year.
Are you saying nobody expected Federer to win?
I think lots wanted him to win, as I did, but feared it was beyond him. I don't think any of the BBC pundits picked him to win.

It was an honour to watch that match today...tennis beyond mere mortals! The thing you don’t really get from TV because they alway show rallies from behind the base line is how the players position themselves on court...Federer is so incredibly aggressive in where he stands...returning Nadal’s first serve from a foot behind the base line where Nadal was way back. Also Federer just hits every ball so bloody early on top of that...hits it waaay out in front of him...it’s a real site to behold. He’s just utterly extraordinary. I’ve been lucky enough to see some pretty big sporting events over the years but the sheer quality of that tennis today was just incredible. I’d choose to watch Federer hit a tennis ball over pretty much any other sporting great excell at their sport. Messi is the only one who compares for me.

Agree completely. Federer is just something else and an absolute one off for me.

I'm not really into Tennis tbh, but Roger F is easily my favourite player, an awesome professional that has been at the top many many years.

Federer is incredible. So is Nadal. And so is Djokovic.

The number of slams they've won is nuts. It looks like Djokovic is going to top that table in a couple of years. He'll be virtually unopposed once Federer and Nadal retire.

Worth taking a moment to recognise Murray's achievements in context, too.

I so wanted Federer to win, and still do of course. If Rafa had been playing anyone else I'd have been behind him.
I play club tennis and watch these two and Novak in awe.and been lucky enough to see them live several times. Who is out ere to replace them? The upcoming lot are of course very good, but up to this level? Not yet.

Was at last years semis, the long one with Isner and Anderson, when Rafa and Novak eventually came on it was a completely different game

C'mon Rog!!

At his peak was Andy up there with them, or was his ranking slightly deceptive?

But could Federer beat Jo Durie at the peak of her powers?

Yep, some people are quick to jump on Murray and say he's no good. But 2 Olympic golds and 2 grand slams in an era of Joker, RFed and Nadal is incredible.

I am not a huge tennis fan, but do find aspects of the sport fascinating.

I think Murray is a bit like Jim Courier or Lendl, not massively talented, but harder workers, and made best use of his ability.

If you compare him to someone like Henman or Goran who had massive weapons but failed really to use them properly consistently for years.

I go back to guys like Edberg, Sampras, Agassi reminds me of Nadal, Sampras obviously of Federer.

Murray is a grafter, gets everything back, amazing defence, staying power, and the ability on some surfaces to nail winners.

He was a hard courts man originally and to make himself an excellent grass courts player is staggering.

And also, people forget the Davis Cup stuff that was immense to him at the time and for tennis in the UK, he almost single-handedly won that. I ahd never watched it in my life before but got caught up int he whole patriotism thing, it was amazing.

I like the guy, and his injury issues are very sad, but to keep trying is amazing, just like all top male tennis players, they push themselves so much injury is almost inevitable, but Andy has been very unlucky.

Fair comment. Just watching Murray play singles looks incredibly punishing compared to say, an ‘effortless’ Federer. The way Murray pushes himself too far just leads to the inevitable injuries imo.

Indeed-so glad Williams is getting a taste of it. A good old thrashing. Good money for an hours work.

Williams just looked tired throughout!

Now did Halep play so well that she made Williams look like an amateur or was Williams really off form? or more likely a bit of both.

Either way. Halep played a beautiful game, remained composed and as a result she got the reward, well done to her.

I think she's hugely out of shape, both mentally and physically.
