I imagine the liney made more of it for potential compo claim purposes but officials in any sport surely have the right to be able to do their job without fear of physical injury. If the ball hit a ref in any other sport as a result of a temper tantrum, accidental or not, they would be off the pitch. You've got to have a clear and unambiguous rule for this sort of thing. Contrition either immediately or later in the press conference doesn't excuse it on any level. Djokovic didn't even bother to attend the after-match conference. That tells you how genuine his apologies were(n't).
I can’t recall any such incident in a football match which seems strange.
It's not always a red card in footy, admittedly, but it is an instant yellow card. Problem with a tennis ball, the size of it and the speed it can be hit, is that it's a lot more dangerous than a football.

I think he's a bit of a dick but that was a light tap. Ridiculous.

I got hit on the forehead yesterday by a proper forehand groundstroke (he was standing at the service line, I was standing inside my service box); it still hurts today and there's a red mark on my forehead but we played on as soon as I'd picked my hat up (yes, it knocked my hat off my head!); the other players wanted a timeout. (I guess the only stupid thing about it was that if I wasn't in the way, it would have sailed off the court so to add insult to injury, we conceded a point!)

Oh definitely, it's just that he wasn't aiming at her and just casually hit it.

Paulo Di Canio & the referee push - remember?

She was a very quick-witted line judge indeed who when hit full on the windpipe, made all those gasping noises immediately she was hit.

Why, because he is Djokovic? And should get special treatment?

It doesn’t matter if it was accidental. He deliberately hit the ball in anger (even if not hard) and it hit and injured an official. He didn’t have to hit the ball. He wasn’t playing a point.

Henman was disqualified at Wimbledon for accidentally hitting a ballgirl.

Djokovic is just a prick. Never his fault (like it wasn’t his fault that people got Covid because of the tournament he promoted).
Really S ?....actually felt it was it total overreaction by lines lady/woman. But there again, it's in America. Always felt a bit sorry for him TBH, never accepted of adored mainly due to his 'odd' bench and the 'eye drops' IMV.

A ball into the throat at that speed wouldn't be something many people brush off - really quite a shock to the line judge IMO.

So you’ve had plenty of tennis balls to the throat at various velocities then?

The throat is one of the few places that a light tap can leave you struggling.

The French Open starts tomorrow.

Is Rafa getting the excuses in early?

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2020/sep/25/fren...

Murray, who hasn’t played a match on clay for over 3 years, plays Wawrinka in the first round.

Murray looked completely out of sorts, none of his normal intensity and there were many balls. even in the middle of the court, that he didn't even run for. In a way I hope he was injured (but not his hip obviously) because if that's his new normal he defintely won't be able to compete at the top level any more. It was quite sad to watch.

It's time for Andy to retire. He's never going to regain the form he's desperate to achieve.

He's too determined to accept his body just can't do it now.

That is a great shout to be honest, he’s gone fairly under the radar compared to his compatriots such as Felix AA. It’s his balance and Federer like mental fortitude which really stands out.

+1 great to watch some of the rallies last night, I guess he just needs to build his strength and stamina a bit, kudos to Nadal though, he's a gritty bugger.

Think Sinner looks superb too. His effortless ball striking on show in slow motion. Baby Fed as regards timing.
