The thing I really like about Emma Raducanu is that she plays with a smile. It sort of lifts you when she plays.
Totally agree. Love her attitude to the game, the way she plays and how she interviews. Someone clearly enjoying every minute is so refreshing. Nike etc will be throwing cash at her and hope she makes the most of it and can enjoy the next few days.SydneyBridge said:
Murray is going to the Olympics, so lets see how well he does there
Yes, as I said earlier he's very short of match practice and hence it's perhaps a bit too early to judge where his ultimate level might be. However, he was a long way off against Shapovalov yesterday so if extra matches don't bring a significant improvement he's got a decision to make (which from the press interviews he's been giving is something he himself realises only too well).bad company said:
I hadn’t seen Sue Barker this tournament until today when she was there discussing a match with Tracy Austin. She seems to have eaten a lot of pies and must have asked the cameraman to only close up on Austin.
Nothing to do with the tennis, just an observation.
I’ve also increased my rotundness. I keep blaming it on lockdown. But the point is swiftly approaching where I’m going to have admit to pure gluttony. Nothing to do with the tennis, just an observation.
After all these years on PH, I keep forgetting there is i) a Sports section and ii) a Tennis thread
Anyway.
I thought, for a 18 y.o. qualifier, Emma played an exceptionally professional and measured game today. Some of her passing shots were top drawer, and she seems to have the quality, ability, and determination to achieve great things. I like the girl.
Norrie? Too many unforced errors for me, and even without those I think he'd have still struggled.
Anyway.

Looks like you were adjacent to his toil!
He will be massively missed when he is finally gone. Evans and Norrie can fill the void, but probably only partly. Cam today played great, I think it’s a little harsh to slate him for making a few errors against Federer - the pressure he was under was huge, and he did well.

I don't think she qualified. I think she was given a wild card, originally to qualifying but then to the main draw after she did well at Nottingham. She played exceptionally well today, you could see that even she was surprised by some of the passing shots she made. She's a breath of fresh air and I hope she continues to do well, stay injury free, and enjoy it.Anyway.

Agreed Norrie seemed nervous and made too many unforced errors.
My thoughts on Murray? He's a step slower than he was (understandably) and I don't think he'll ever get that back. Without being 100% he won't be able to compete at the very top and I doubt if he wants to continue his career ranked in the 50-150 range. I'd love to see him playing more top level doubles, which is easier on the body, but I doubt if he will.

With the Williams brother's dominance ebbing and the subsequent demise of grunting, screeching and fist pumping
perhaps a return to a more genteel ladies game, the glow of perspiration on pretty faces, the pitter-patter of dainty feet,
the flutter of floral crinolines and a maybe a glimpse of ankle, in a world where all the players look like Jenny Agutter from The Railway Children.
{ he's gone gaga this time, Nurse, his medication.}
Not sure that's called for tbh. Regardless of what anyone thinks about them as players (good or bad) that sort of comment is just utterly moronic, and definitely not the supposed "joke" you probably think it is.perhaps a return to a more genteel ladies game, the glow of perspiration on pretty faces, the pitter-patter of dainty feet,

What a brilliant match the sensational 18 year old Emma Raducanu played today against Sorana Cirstea. No "chucking the toys out of the pram" when a point didn't go her way either..! She played freely, with great composure and what a backhand stroke she has.., and forehand isn't too shabby either. I think the match would have been closer if Sorana had made more of her 1st serves, but Emma was the stronger and better player today... Go Girl
She’ll get knocked over as soon as she meets decent opposition. Nothing to see here, cannon fodder at best. In my opinion.eps said:

The ‘big 3’ are becoming vulnerable which makes it very unpredictable for the next 2-3 years. I doubt we’ll ever see the consistency of the aforementioned big 3 again, so will be interesting to see who ends up world number one in say 2023.
You’d have said Stefanos after RG, but I’m not sure he has the mental strength after a big loss. Danil/Rublev will be top 5, but again have a few breakdowns when things aren’t going their way.
I think Alex Zverev is the most consistent and complete player on tour at the moment (bar Djokovic and over all three surfaces), closely followed by Matteo Berrettini.
Lots of talented young players coming through in FAA,
Musetti, Sinner, Alcaraz etc but they need a few years on tour yet.
Very interesting time to be a tennis fan

I hope that Raducanu manages at least the quarter finals and then goes on to actually do something. With Andy fading we need another Brit to throw our support behind.
Yep, well she is 'close' the Andy Murray party as his wife's father is Raducanu's Head Coach.Of course it's still early in her career - but some of the shots that were hit were phenomenal. Thankfully they've kept her on Court 1, to try and dampen things down a little, but the Daily Fail seem to now have Emma on her radar...
Maybe that run of 8 games in a row really helped in that match. I think there was a minor wobble in the 3rd or 4th game in the 1st set and then something similar in the 2nd set, but overall against her opponent she just kept on producing great shots and positive play. Cirstea did seem to struggle with her 1st serve which helped swing the balance in Emma's favour, but you can only play whoever is in front of you!!
She feels like the real deal to me - outstanding backhand, good forehand. Good shots on the run - there were so many times in the match that I wasn't expecting to see the ball returned let alone as a winner!

What will likely determine long term grand slam success though is temperament.Being fearless is easier when there is no burden of expectation.
